UFC on Fox 8: Johnson Retains Title, MacDonald Earns Decision
Demetrious Johnson retains his UFC flyweight title with a fifth-round submission victory
Demetrious ‘Might Mouse’ Johnson and John Moraga capped off the latest UFC on Fox card with an exciting five-round affair that ended with a nasty arm-bar submission. Johnson retained his title after dominating Moraga and securing the latest submission victory in UFC history with an arm bar with 1:17 left in the fight. The win was Johnson’s second title defense and eighth in his last 10 fights.
In the co-main event Rory MacDonald used his jab and footwork to neutralize the aggressive power-striker, Jake Ellenberger and secure a unanimous decision victory. The fight was supposed catapult the winner into the upper ranks of the welterweight division and into a possible title shot against the winner of the Georges St. Pierre and Johny Hendricks bout in November. However, MacDonald did not look particularly impressive and will probably need another fight or two before he earns the aforementioned title shot.
Early in the night Liz Carmouche and Jessica Andrade became the first women in the UFC to fight on the Fox network. The former title contender, Carmouche, did not disappoint as she earned a dominant victory over Andrade.
