UPDATE: SF Giants Land Hunter Pence
At last season's trade deadline, both the Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies went all-out for another bat in their respective lineups. The Giants landed on Carlos Beltran while the Phils came through with a trade for Hunter Pence.
The Giants failed to make the playoffs as they dropped the division to the surprising Arizona Diamondbacks while playing the season without All-star catcher, Buster Posey. The Phillies cruised to a divisional crown, however, they were eliminated in the first round of postseason play, and thus disappointed the franchise, their fans and the city of Philadelphia.
With the Giants tied for their division lead with the Dodgers and the Phillies appearing to be sellers at the non-waiver trade deadline, the Giants are looking for help in their outfield and their lineup. With Pablo Sandoval out for another two weeks due to a strained hamstring, the lineup is even more depleted than it once was as the Giants have not scored a run in their two previous games.
Hunter Pence has one more year of arbitration eligibility and he is due to make over $10 million this season, so the Giants may back off a little because their payroll is about to increase even more so when they re-sign Melky Cabrera after this season (not to mention the 6 year-$127 million Matt Cain extension). However, the Giants are weak in right field and they clearly can't expect the move for Marco Scutaro, the utility infielder, to truly counteract the Dodgers drastic trade, which landed them Hanley Ramirez.
If the Giants want to continue to prove to their extremely loyal fan-base (135 consecutive home sellouts) that they are in it to win it as they were two years prior, they will have to pull the trigger on this move to upgrade their outfield and make their lineup that much more potent. Pence can provide the home-run hitter the Giants sorely lack as Buster Posey leads the team with a mere 13 homeruns currently. Pence has 17 on the year and his bat in the middle of the Giants lineup would only help Melky, Buster and the Kung Fu Panda see better pitches from now through October.
