US Olympic basketball team announces 28 candidates
According to Marc Stein of ESPN, there are 28 candidates that have been selected for the 2016 Rio Olympic Team. They are as follows:
LaMarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony, Bradley Beal, Tyson Chandler, DeMarcus Cousins, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, Kenneth Faried, Paul George, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Gordon Hayward, Dwight Howard, Andre Iguodala, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Kyle Korver, David Lee, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Klay Thompson, Russell Westbrook, and Deron Williams.
It is possible that others can be added to the pool of candidates, but the team must be trimmed down to 12 players by 2016. Injuries and other variables can become x-factors for who makes the squad and who does not between now and 2016, but any compilation of these 12 players would make for a competitive team to bring home the gold. The great news is that players want to play for the Olympic Team now and are willing to sacrifice their summer to play for their country.
