United fullback Fabio will join Benfica on a loan-deal next season
Fabio da Silva’s agent has confirmed that the Manchester United defender will move to Benfica next season. The Brazilian fullback is being sent away on a one-year load deal to gain more experience with the Portuguese outfit.
Old Trafford’s legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants Fabio impress his critics and fans by playing in Portugal next season. In an interview earlier this month, Ferguson admitted that United had a couple of talented players that were unable to feature on the field.
The lack of experience stunted the grooming of these players Ferguson told reporters. The Scotsman further informed that he was going to address this issue by sending these players on year season-long loan deals.
“Fabio will go on loan next season to give him concentrated first-team experience,” Ferguson said. “I have already talked to him and he understands the value of playing regularly at a higher level than we can give him at the moment.”
Manchester United has also been linked with a transfer deal for Benfica’s star midfielder Nicolas Gaitan. Rumor has it, United will offer £20 million for the Argentina international. United have also offered a permanent transfer for Federico Macheda and a loan deal for Fabio in order to meet the £35 million release clause in Gaitan’s contract.
In an interview to The Telegraph, Fabio’s agent Cassiano Pereira told reporters that the likelihood of Fabio playing in Portugal next season was very high.
“There is a high possibility that Fabio will go to Benfica. Alex Ferguson has talked with me and Fabio about this possibility and the next two or three weeks we should know our position,” Pereira said.
Unfortunate injuries and Patrice Evra are the main reasons Fabio has been overshadowed at United. Fabio plays as a left-back but Evra consistently impressive performances have cemented his name at the spot.
However the age factor will come to haunt Evra in a season or two. Ferguson will definitely call upon Fabio to replace Evra then.
