Update: Sam Perlozzo will be is first manager fired ... one month too late.
READ MORE:
Update: As I mentioned earlier this morning, Sam Perlozzo has indeed been fired. Rejoice Oriole fans ... I think.

It's already that time of the year, when a team makes a last ditch effort to save the season mixing up the clubhouse.

Sam Perlozzo was clearly not going to work in Baltimore, but you'd like to see the front office take some responsibility for the $42 million dollars of waste that resides in the bullpen. Bill Ordine of the Baltimore Sun wonders who's fault this really is?

So I pose this question: If owner Peter Angelos won't trust Perlozzo to manage this year's team, why should he trust his current personnel decision-makers to assemble next year's club?

According to Buster Olney, the Orioles have hired former Cubs President Andy McPhail, who plans to meet with Joe Girardi possibly today. It's his job if he wants it. Expect Perlozzo to be fired later today. As is the case in most seasons, this opens the floodgates giving a couple more teams a good reason to fire there own.

we could hire Casey Stengel, Tony LaRussa, Earl Weaver and Tommy LaSorda as a 4 headed manager and we would still fail because of the attitude that comes from ownership. Life sucks as an O's fan right now.

If Angelos could just leave whoever is hired ALONE, they might have a chance to straighten this mess out!! (Yeah, right!!)  I would like to see McPhail and Gerardi take a shot at it--maybe nothing would happen right away, but by 2008(maybe 2009?) the O's could at least get some repectability!!

I'll write more about this after work, but three quick thoughts.

1.) Thank (insert deity) Perlozzo is gone.

2.) I doubt Girardi's coming.

3.) I don't know how McPhail is going to help.

I think Girardi will come but not make a difference unless he's bringing a big bat and a bullpen with him.

Where does this leave Leo Mazzone?  Is he still the pitching coach?  I know Perlozzo was the reason he left Atlanta.  They are childhood friends and Mazzone took the job as a favor.  It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

That sucks too, because he belonged in Atlanta. He earned his spot their, and gainined repect all over the league working with Bobby Cox.

There's a lot of chatter about a possible buyout, but I don't see Mazzone wanting it (he is being paid a lot of money) or Angelos wanting to pay it.

nope, he is going to remain in the organization, maybe in a minor league capacity. Early reports also have Mazzone and the other coaches staying status quo...
