After falling at Indianapolis last week, Rossi donned a special helmet. The helmet has a smiling image of the donkey's face from the film 'Shrek' painted on top - similar to Rossi's memorable 2008 Mugello helmet, featuring a shocked picture of his own face. The choice of a donkey is a joke at Rossi's own expense for crashing at Indianapolis last Sunday
The race began in dramatic fashion with a 4 bike pile up on the first corner, with both American's:Colin Edwards and Nicky Hayden involved as well as Randy De Puniet of France, after Alex De Angeles ploughed into the side of several people, narrowly avoiding world championship contender Jorge Lorenzo.
Dani Pedrosa, after starting 2nd lead the race in the early stages after launching his usual fantastic start (he only weighs 7 1/2 stone so there's not much of him to haul the bike round), he led Toni Elias from Lorenzo and Rossi, until the cream Rose and Valentino charged back to the front taking Lorenzo with him
Having held the lead in the early stages Repsol Honda’s Pedrosa could not match the pace of the powerful Fiat Yamaha pair, eventually crossing the line ten seconds behind Lorenzo to complete the podium
Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) had a fierce fight behind the rostrum finishers, with Dovizioso eventually coming out on top by two-tenths of a second for his third fourth place finish in a row.
The top ten was rounded off by early race leader Toni Elías (San Carlo Honda Gresini), Mika Kallio (Ducati Marlboro), Marco Melandri (Hayate Racing), Chris Vermeulen (Rizla Suzuki) and James Toseland (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), whilst temporary Pramac Racing representative Aleix Espargaró did very well in eleventh place in just his second MotoGP race.
The higlight of the day though had to be the podium celebration, where Valentino donned a set of comical donkey ears to the delight of his home fans, most of who by this time had spilled onto the track. Another great week of motorbike racing and I look forward to 4 weeks time at Estoril Portugal, where Rossi will look to extend his 30 point lead over team-mate Lorenzo.
