Van Persie and Rooney set for Manchester United return
After a 3-1 hammering at the hands of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday there was little that could have brought a smile back to the face of Manchester United manager David Moyes. Well, news of the return of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney should have the Scotsman jumping up and down with joy.
Manchester United’s two leading strikers will return to the action in the coming week. Van Persie has already joined the team in training Rooney is behind him only by a day, ready to meet his teammates on the field.
Van Persie and Rooney’s return to squad will be a welcome boost for Moyes’ attempt to stabilize at tattered and turbulent campaign with Manchester United this season. Rooney, who missed Manchester United’s last four games because of a groin injury, has been in Egypt enjoying a break from football in warm weather, as prescribed by the fitness coach.
The England international didn’t travel with the squad to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but Moyes is hopeful of having him in the team for the second leg of the Capital One Cup semifinal with Sunderland on Wednesday.
“Wayne's come back fresh. He's doing some running and looking good,” Moyes told reporters. “He's had a break, done some strengthening work on his groin.”
Van Persie and Rooney haven’t been together on the field for Manchester United since early December. During their absence Manchester United’s form has been terrible. Van Persie’s first half of the season has been plagued with injuries. The Dutchman has missed the last 10 games.
Moyes is optimistic he will have the former Arsenal striker back on his feet in no time at all. Moyes revealed that Van Persie will join full training with the squad sometime this week.
“I'm hoping Robin's got a good chance of training at the start of [the] week,” Moyes said. “If I could get him back on the grass it would be a great boost for us: he's a really important player and one we've missed. Both of them are getting closer to fitness, so let's hope it's not too long until we get him back.”
Moyes’ most expensive signing so far, Marouane Fellaini will return to the fold soon too. The Belgian midfielder has been absent from action because of a wrist and back injury since December 4, when Everton defeated Manchester United 1-0.
