Blog Photo - Vancouver Canucks name Willie Desjardins as Head CoachThe 2013-2014 season was not the season the Vancouver Canucks organization had hoped for under the guidance of John Tortorella, and he was fired by the team May 1 when the Canucks failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

Today a replacement for Tortorella was announced, and he is a first time head coach.  Willie Desjardins has most recenlty been head coach for the Texas Stars, where he led them to victory in the Calder Cup.  Willie has been with the Dallas organization (the Texas Stars are a feeder team for the Dallas Stars) andhas worked as an associate coach with the Dallas Stars.

The Canucks are determined to start from scratch, it seems, first engaging Trevor Linden as General Manager, back before the season ended.  Linden hired Jim Benning from the Boston Bruins shortly afterwards.

Desjardins and Linden are not strangers, and perhaps that has something to do with Willie's decision to move to Vancouver.  He was also in talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but says that the Canuck organization offered him what he was looking for.  Willie Desjardins has been in hockey for 25 years, and coached Canada to a silver medal in the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championships.  He and Trevor Linden are associated through the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, where Willie coached and Trevor played.

The season won't get underway until September, so the team and the coach will have a couple of months to work together.

What do you think?  Is this a good move for the Canucks or not?
