Unlike Mike Singletary, the 49ers can't win without Vernon Davis
Remember that? Back in 2008, Mike Singletary famously said he couldn't play, win or coach with Vernon Davis. Can't do it.
3+ years later, things have changed dramatically in San Francisco. In fact, the 49ers couldn't have won WITHOUT him yesterday.
Davis led all receivers yesterday (in either game) with 180 receiving yards on 7 catches. Two of those catches were for touchdowns, including the game-winner with 9 seconds left in the game, a 14-yard strike from QB Alex Smith. Davis got rocked as he caught the ball, but managed to hold on for the score.
Davis has evolved into one of the best tight ends in football. This year, he didn't put up the same numbers as guys like Rob Gronkowski or Jimmy Graham, but he was still one of the best options for Smith, and has been one of his favorite targets for years.
Maybe it's Jim Harbaugh, or maybe Vernon has really turned a corner, but the guy who Singletary "couldn't play with" is now someone the 49ers couldn't live without.
