Tottenham Hotspur center back Jan Vertonghen insists Liverpool would have failed to enter the top-four if Luis Suarez hadn’t been in there team. The Belgian defender believes Suarez is the primary reason behind Liverpool’s strong push into the top four teams of the Premier League.

The Reds have been in hot-red form this season. The free-scoring Liverpool side is currently the league’s top goalscoring side, and the credit for that achievement mostly goes to Suarez. With a 6-3 win over Cardiff City on the road on Saturday, Liverpool are now second on the Premier League table.

A hat trick in South Wales has taken Suarez’s tally of goals to 28 for the season. Therefore, Suarez has certainly been a big factor behind Liverpool’s success. Vertonghen claims Liverpool wouldn’t have been able to perform so well had the Uruguayan star not been in their team or had been unable to produce such form.

“Suarez is the reason for that,” Vertonghen told reporters, ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Anfield on Sunday. “At the moment he [Suarez] is up there as one of the best strikers in the world. I think he is the difference between the teams. [Daniel] Sturridge obviously is doing well and those two are very hard to stop.

“Liverpool are one of the best teams in the league and they show it every week. It is going to be very hard, especially at Anfield, and I hope we can play as we did last season because we did very well, not the result but the performance.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to acquire a Champions League berth, came down to their loss at Anfield last season. The Merseyside clash proved to be a pivotal moment in the campaign of the Spurs last year.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently six points away from fourth-placed Arsenal, but the Gunners have a game in hand, which means the difference could potentially be up to nine points. Vertonghen insists his side can still fight for a Champions League spot.

Vertonghen, who is expected to leave the Spurs if there is no Champions League action next season, suggested that Tottenham Hotspur should concentrate on getting as many points as possible. Vertonghen explained that a winning mentality was the key to keep fighting till the last moment.

“We will try and get as many points as possible and, in the end, we will see what we get,” Vertonghen said.
