2007 Nathan's Famous July Fourth International Hot Dog Eating Contest Live Comment Thread
READ MORE:

Today we take a day to celebrate all the things that are good about America. Freedom, fireworks, and shoving as many hot dogs down your throat as possible.

Yes, today is Tim Hardaway's favorite sporting event, the Nathan's Famous July Fourth International Hot Dog Eating Contest!

According to legend, the contest has been held at the Nathan's at Coney Island every year since 1916. The company also owns Kenny Rogers' Roasters, but their annual contest to see who can eat the most pieces of delectable roasted chicken out of Kenny Rogers' beard is not nearly as popular.

As everyone knows, Takeru Kobayashi of Japan has dominated the event in recent years, winning 6 straight titles. Fortunately for him, he won't have to face a bear, but he will have to face a formidable opponent, Joey Chestnut, who hopes to bring the coveted mustard belt back to its rightful place in the United States. In regional qualifying, Chestnut set a new world record by eating 59.5 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes in Tempe, Arizona. Last year, Kobayashi edged Chestnut by just 2 hot dogs. Chestnut is out for revenge in New York.

There are other contestants, including one guy who is nicknamed "Gravy" because stuff starts coming out his nose once he has had his 5th or 6th hot dog. For once I am glad I don't have HD. Let's face it though - the title is going to go to Kobayashi or Chestnut, unless they make a bad decision to go out for a big lunch together beforehand. The drama of this year's contest is magnified by Kobayashi's alleged "tired jaw", which may or may not be a legitimate medical issue. Provided Kobayashi is up for the challenge and is not a last second scratch, this year's contest should be a classic.

The contest is of course being broadcast at 12pm Eastern/9am Pacific on ESPN (hey, this is more of a sport than poker or spelling). I will be updating as the contest progresses, and I welcome you to leave comments as well.

Let the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest commence!

Joey Chestnut wins with 66 hot dogs! Joey Chestnut is a True American Hero!

ESPN always feels the need to compare everyone to everything. So far on Sportscenter, Kobayashi has been compared to Willis Reed, T.O, and Curt Schilling. The lone woman in the competition has been compared to a horse.

Yeah, I was hoping for a bit bigger of a turnout, but it's not surprising since most people are off doing things.

I wonder if there is a fire swallowing contest somewhere?

There is a "reindeer sausage eating champion of the world"? You learn something every day.

At the halfway point, Joey Chestnut is on 43, Takeru Kobayashi on 41 and closing in.

Supposedly, if we Google "American hero" tomorrow, we will see Joey Chestnut, right alongside Taylor Hicks.

And Chestnut breaks the Coney Island record!

Kobayashi pulls within 1!

2 minutes to go!

The stomach of the girl behind Kobayashi is distracting, in a very good way.

I can't believe the voice of the Indy 500 has been reduced to this.

Kobayashi hits 60 first!

Chestnut hits 60 seconds later!

It's Maris vs. Mantle, the race to 61!

That was way more exciting than the NBA Finals.

That was pretty disgusting what Kobayashi did. He just puked that hot dog and water(?) and re-ate it.

I don't think that was 3 hot dogs worth of vomit.

I'm just impressed that he managed to keep the rest down. Otherwise, we would be looking at a very dark day in American history.
