2008 World Series: Why You Should Root For The Philadelphia Phillies To Beat The Tampa Bay Rays
As If The Cowbells Alone Weren't Reason Enough, Here's Why You Should Root For The Phightin' Phils
As the World Series starts, many people are left without a team to root for. This is mostly because not many people like the Phillies outside of Philadelphia, and... well, until a couple weeks ago, you could count the total number of Rays fans on one hand.

For those of you still riding the fence, there's really only one answer. Forget the Cinderella story. Don't buy into the new math, where 9 = 8. Don't be swayed by the media, who wants to pretend that the Rays are the only hard-luck team in this World Series. Disregard all of that, and throw your support behind the Philadelphia Phillies. Here's why:

Reason #1: The myth of the Tampa Bay Rays fan. Despite finishing atop the AL East with the 3rd-best record in all of baseball, the Rays had the 5th-worst attendance in the entire MLB. While there are quite a few "fans" who would love to claim that they've been there all along, it's simply not mathematically possible. Even when they were battling for the AL East lead in mid-September, there were thousands of empty seats. People can say what they want about how obnoxious the fans are in Boston, but the average attendance at Fenway Park is MORE than a sellout. The capacity is 37,400 for night games (36,984 during the day), but the Sox managed to average 37,632 butts in the seats for each game. That's 15,000 more than the Rays, whose stadium has an almost identical capacity of 36,048.

Reason #2: If the Rays win, it means more teams will think that it's possible to win with a tiny payroll, resulting in more lousy teams. While it's true that it's possible to win without breaking the bank, history has shown that more often than not, the quality of play is directly proportionate to the size of a team's payroll. It's a bit unfortunate, but simple economics dictates that the better players will get the bigger contracts. Therefore, GENERALLY speaking (not always), the teams with higher payrolls are going to do better, and teams who refuse to spend more money are going to continue to suck. They may have a good year once a decade or so, but for the most part, they won't go anywhere. Isn't that right, Kansas City? For every team like the Rays who succeed with a small payroll, there are a handful of other teams like the Pirates, Reds, Padres, Nationals, Rangers, Athletics and Orioles, who are hampered by their unwillingness and/or inability to compete financially. Even the "good" teams with low payrolls, like the Twins, have seen their chances at success diminish with the forced departure of guys like Torii Hunter and Johan Santana, due to salary concerns.

Reason #3: The Backstreet Boys. Of all the possible choices to sing the National Anthem before Game 1 of the World Series, the Rays seemingly went out of their way to find the worst possible group that they could find. I don't even know what to say about this, other than I am not looking forward to this at all. I'd rather hear Roseanne.

Reason #4: Tropicana Field. The catwalks, the artificial turf, the ridiculously low roof and the plethora of empty seats make this place one of the worst places in America to watch a baseball game. And did I mention the empty seats?

Reason #5: The bottom-feeders who now proclaim themselves as diehard fans are simply ridiculous. Don't get me wrong. The Rays have a few fans who are generally classy, knowledgeable and loyal to the team. I mean no disrespect for the few of you who are out there. However, for every good fan, there seem to be dozens of others who simply don't get it, for whatever reason. I'd love to post a picture of some of these fans, but when I googled "Rays fans", nothing came up.

Reason #6: The Cowbell Kidd. I know I just called out basically the entire fan base, but here's one clown (literally) who will someday have a special spot reserved for him in baseball hell. Not only is he possibly the most ignorant baseball fan in the history of YouTube, he also shamelessly ripped off his name from a legendary Penn State tailgater.

Reason #7: The Phillies Ball Girls. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I'll shut up and let the above picture do the talking.

Reason #8: Dick Vitale. As if we weren't assaulted by Dickie V enough during March Madness, now he's all over our TV's again, after trading in his Duke jersey for a Rays one.

Hopefully this was helpful to any of you out there who were still undecided. If you need any more reasons, let me know, and I'm sure I can come up with some. If you have any more reasons to root for the Phillies (or against the Rays) feel free to post those, as well.

2) Yup, I'm sure teams like the Mets and Yankees and even the Red Sox are going to cut their payrolls to match that of the Rays. Let's be serious.
3) Who cares
4) Shea Stadium was crap, does that mean I wasn't supposed to root for the Mets either?
5) Sure, only the Rays have bandwagoners. ALL Sox fans are die-hards, right? You know, all those fans in Cali that weren't there pre-2004 are all die hards. C'mon, you know winning teams are going to have bandwagoners.
6) One dumbass with no direct impact on the Rays is enough reason for everyone to root against a team?

How about reason to root FOR the Rays?
Boston fans- I would think you would want the Rays to win to not make the Sox look as bad- if the Phillies beat the Rays, then one can assume that the Phillies would also beat the Sox. Normally you want the team that beat you to do well because then you can say "We got beat by the better team.

I know I'm rooting for the Rays because I hate the Phillies. I would probably root for the Sox if they won.

If you are rooting for the Phillies, how about reasons you want THEM to win, not reasons you want the Rays to lose.
Better yet, how about you stop crying and actually write something about baseball, and not just attack another team you only have animosity towards because they beat you.

Pat, in all honestly, I generally like what you write. But when it comes to Boston (which goes hand-in-hand for against New York) the Sox in particular, you sound like such a punk.

Despite what people may think, Dickie V has been a Rays fan since their inception. He also briefly thought about becoming a part-time owner. I can't knock Vitale for this, he's had season tickets since the Rays came to town. In fact, he may be the one true Rays fan out there.

The Trop is by far the worst place to ever watch a baseball game.  I went there for Opening Day 2002 and was so dissapointed.  We got some cheap seats, and had to take about 13  ecscalators up to our seats.  Passing a Hooters and various other restraunts inside of the ballpark.  By the 2nd Inning, I decided that I wanted to go closer.  My fav. seats in a ball park are left field - outfield area.  I'm a bit of a heckler.  Low and behold, front row seats were a dime a dozen.  The announced attendence was somewhere between 10-12,000 FOR AN OPENING DAY GAME.  Symply pathetic.  I left after the 7th inning, checked the stadium off the list, and vowed never to go back.  So far so good!!!

Opening day in 2002 was the Rays vs Tigers and the attendance was 38,142. Any more made up stupid comments?

Another blog by a still bitter Red Sox fan.....gee, does that surprise me? Not really.

#1. Yes there have been quite a few people in the Bay Area jumping on the bandwagon. But seriously? That happens with every team that not accustomed to winning. The Braves for years were bottom feeders in attendance, the Mets went through a time in the mid 90's, the PRECIOUS Phillies from 1996 all the way through 2003 before Citizens opened were always near the bottom. Also, if you knew where the Trop was you wouldn't really want to go down there either. It's in the middle of the freakin hood so far out of the way it's not funny. They need to put it in a central location where it's easily accessible for everyone.

#2. Again, this isn't the first time this has happened so to bring it up now is pointless. I don't think that other teams just think they can win with a lower payroll. They know they usually can't. They don't do it on purpose and "expect" to win anything. For the record, mostly  all the preseason baseball magazines had the Rays winning between 82-85 games this year. People knew they were going to be better than in years past. (That was even before Longoria was in the mix)

#3. Valid point, let's move on......

#4. I will have to admit, the Trop does pretty much suck. I'll have to agree with jeradshaw up there in saying that you have to take like 13 escalators. It is a pain in the ass because there is really only one way in.....But, on the other hand, Tropicana Field wasn't originally built to be a baseball stadium.

#5. This is tied in to question #1.

#6. This guy has been around forever. I've been living in Tampa for almost 5 years and this guy has been parked in his right field seat against the wall EVERY game. Also, every team has ignorant fans. Not just the Rays. There were plenty of ignorant Red Sox fans there too....

#7. Phillies got the edge there only because there are more of them. The Rays have their own set of hotties that dance on the dugouts....

#8. Also, as stated before. Vitale has been a season ticket holder from day 1 back in 1998.

I'm a Marlins fan. Do I attend games? No, I can't afford them. I watch them and root them on. When they contended for playoff spots and when they were in the playoffs I made it a point to save a couple bucks to attend those games because they were special games. That doesn't make me any less of a fan just because I can't afford to be a season ticket holder.

I am also a Twins fan due to family living there and learning about the game while watching them they became my team. I don't attend games considering I live in Florida. But I still cheer them on but I don't talk about it all the time.

My point is just because a "fan" doesn't attend games regularly and doesn't announce their love of the team with every other breathe doesn't make them any less deserving of a chance of seeing a championship.

Pat I see a lot of your points. But look where your sports background is from. One of the most respected and hated sports nations in the country. Why because they have history and their fans are die hard. People have been watching the Red Sox for generations(since 1901). Florida baseball teams(Marlins 1993 & Rays 1998) have what one generation of followers and supporters.

#4: Yes that stadium is awful.  I was there back in 2000 to see a game against the Indians with my friend and his dad while we were on vacation in Orlando.  Damn that place is ugly!

Reason #9 - Cry me a river, Sawx fan. The Rays winning is GREAT for baseball. They used the system and an organizatioonal philosophy PROPERLY to build a team that should be dominant for the next 5-10 years! That is AMERICAN ingenuity and hard work and it should be HONORED as an achievement not lambasted out of jealousy.

Do you want the Rays to have a $200 million payroll? Geez, then the Red Sox will NEVER beat them, will they?

Face it. Andrew Friedman, Matt Silverman and the Rays did it smarter than your precious Boy Wonder Theo Epstooge and all you can do is cry a river about it all winter long.

Another fine case demonstrating that Red Sox fans have insecurities and SEVERE inferiority issues. It's sad. A Yankees fan would never do this...

Reason #10 - Yawn. Red Sox fans aren't only loudmouthed -wannabe-know-it-alls, they're aren't even in the same time zone as "funny". Like Rays fans haven't heard these same tired, worn "cracks" before... And they're all based on assumptions and ignorance.

You know what would be funny? If you knew what you were talking about for once.

I hope this was cathartic for you and all but face it, your team lost because the Rays are the better team - plain and simple - REGARDLESS of all of this regurgitation.

BTW - I'll tell the Red Sox players I see out on the golf courses here in AZ you said "Hi!"

Nah.  The Trop isn't even close.  In fact, on an 87 degree day in Tampa, it was fairly pleasant.  I think the translucent roof helps the "closed in" feeling a little bit.  It's not the best stadium I've been to, but it was comfortable and the only park in MLB that I've visited with free parking near the place.  I flew down on vacation and caught 2 Rays/Sox games in 2006.

Of the stadiums I've been to, nothing will EVER be worse than Olympic Stadium in Montreal.  I mean Tropicana Field is Fenway Park in comparison to that piece of crap.  That stadium is the pinnacle of suck.

We're talking about going down again in April/May next year and will probably catch a couple more games.  It's not the best park I've been to, but it's fine for now.  Their plans for a new stadium look fantastic.

Wow the whole payroll deal is a reason why you should want the Rays to win. I am not a fan despite being surrounded by fans much of my life (I live in Florida, and yes there are and were many fans, even before this season, for the Rays around here despite contrary belief). I dislike the fact that there is no salary cap in baseball and the richest team wins, which gives no chance to other teams. Everyone needs that Cinderella Story! It's what keeps people going. Even though I don't like the Rays I would much rather see them win than some stuck up, overpayed Phillies!

Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz That should be enough.  But the Rays fans will say:
BJ Upton, Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena, Willy Aybar, Jason Bartlett

But if it gets to the bull pen I think the Phillies have the edge.

Wouldn't be so sure on that....Rays have a bullpen that can be used all sorts of ways. By far more flexable. Also, if Maddon uses Price the right way. He can very well be the ace in the hole.

congrats, you looked up the numbers.  I'm proud of you.  The fact is it looked like about 10-12,000 people.  When I can walk around and sit wherever the hell I want on Opening day seems a bit strange in a real baseball city.  I hope you guys get swept and beat badly.  Just for the one year wonder fans such as yourself!

Is that all you got? C'mon man, I already heard this with the Red sox series. Real creative. Almost as bad as me saying to you that I hope the Cubs are enjoying this watching from home.......And as far as "one year wonder fans such as myself".....look at my profile there genius and you will see that NO WHERE on there are the Rays listed as one of my favorite teams. Am I supporting them? Of course, I live here, IN TAMPA. Are they my favorite team? No. At least my team has 2 WS Championships (1997 and 2003). Which is more than you will see in your lifetime......

As a baseball purist, allow me to assert that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are not a real MLB team.

And the season should be over and wrapped by Oct. 10.

By no means am I a rays fan. Just for the record as a Rox fan I feel I must root for the NL, but the Rays are a better team than the Phils. BJ Upton owned the Sox, the Rays have a better bulpen. Longoria is playing well. Plus the Phils have had too much time off. The past 2 WS runners up (Tigers and Rox) had over 5 days off and both lost without much of a fight. Rays will win it in 5

I like the Phillies as far as their roster and talent is concerned, but their fans are so awful that I find myself hoping the Rays pull it out.  I just hope the Rays fans don't go all Florida Marlins on them and no-show next season.  That'd be disappointing.

That's why I underlined it.....I didn't say they were perfect. Also, their bullpen only lost one game. You take away that* game and they had a combined 19.1 IP with 3 ER for a 1.41 ERA. That's pretty flawless.

*2.2 IP and 8 ER......

I'm not a fan of either team, and I don't hate the Red Sox - but I will be rooting for Tampa in this series. I actually got to see them play in Seattle this summer and MY team certainly didn't even come close to the post season, so the fact that the other team at that game will be playing in the WS is kind of exciting for me. If that's a stupid bandwagon reason, then so be it. Go Rays!

Hey, why don't you come next year and try and get a ticket ..I'll help you....
Why don't you go ahead and take a picture of all the Cubs ticket stubs from the games you've ever been to and post the picture on this site. Or better yet the ticket stub from the Rays game you claim to have been at. What's that? That is the rub isn't it, the Rays are almost flawless, while Lidge (up to this point in time) IS FLAWLESS.  Last night he had that Slider working!

It will be a good series, but I think the Phils win it in 5-6 games.

Root against the Rays? I can't root for the Phillies. Underdogs are what make baseball. Just because ESPN has a raging woody for the Red Sox and Yankees? I could say the same thing in basketball for the Celtics and Lakers. I'm rooting for the Rays because this may be the beginning of a change in sports. Sure, I know that the Red Sox and Yankees will go spend more money next year.
I've got something for you to write about. How about make the American League four divisions? East (Toronto, Baltimore, Cleveland and Tampa) Central (White Sox, Kansas City, Detroit and Minnesota) West (As it is) and that special 4th division (Red Sox and Yanks). Special rule for the divisions, 2nd place goes home every year. That would make those boys at Bristol almost salivate to make that series mean something.

That is the rub isn't it, the Rays are almost flawless, while Lidge (up to this point in time) IS FLAWLESS.  Last night he had that Slider working!

It will be a good series, but I think the Phils win it in 5-6 games.
Well I surely couldn't say the are flawless. Nobody is flawless....(except Lidge) and with the exception of 3 pitches Hamels was up there himself.

You wouldn't say the Phillies are an underdog as well? They have a deeper history of losing than even the Rays do.
