#5 Texas Longhorns Beat #1 Oklahoma Sooners 45-35, Referees Satisfied With The Finish [NCAA College Football]
Oscar Nominations For Colt McCoy And Mike Knall; Eye Appointments Scheduled For The Entire Refereeing Crew
In what was one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the year outside OSU-USC, the 5th-ranked Texas Longhorns came away with a victory over #1 Oklahoma, 45-35.

While the game was a competitive, hard-fought battle, it was marred by several poor calls by the referees. Several plays were wrongly called roughing the passer and late hits on Texas QB Colt McCoy, who did his best Manu Ginobili impersonation a few times. Oklahoma punter Mike Knall must have seen what was going on, and decided to try the same thing, since it was working so well for McCoy. The resulting penalty gave the Sooners a first down, instead of being forced to punt, and they responded with a TD.

However, the most controversial call came with about a minute and a half left in the 3rd quarter. McCoy threw what looked like an interception in the end zone by Lamont Robinson, but what called an incomplete pass, setting up a Texas FG:

The Longhorns took their first lead of the game there, and would go on to win by 10. This was definitely a pivotal play, and swung momentum heavily in favor of Texas.

The rankings will now shift around quite a bit, and some people think Texas will move up all the way to #1. It definitely legitimizes their current ranking, since they had only beaten bad teams before this game.

Oklahoma has been the victim of controversial calls in the past as well, including a loss to Oregon 2 years ago that resulted in several suspensions.

Where do you put Texas in your rankings now? Obviously it depends on how Mizzou and LSU do in their games, but this was definitely a big game for the Longhorns.

Not only was the interpection overturned, but there where 2 roughing the passer calls against Oklahoma that were called when McCoy was running out of bounds that kept two sepearte drives alive, and each led to points.  One of the calls was ridicolous because the Oklahoma player was trying to keep Colt from falling.  Even the play by play callers said both roughing the passer calls were horrible, that it is football let them play, and in a game with such big impilcations just do not call ticky tac calls.

If Mizzou and LSU both win, I think Bama 1, Mizzou 2, LSU 3, Texas 4...a good 2 vs 4 battle next week is what I look more forward to than what was today.

i gotta disagree with you Pat.  Whenever a quarterback goes out of bounds and anyone gets close to him any referee, and this may be fair or not, is going to err on the side of caution.  I agree with the first call the ref made, but the second one # 28 was actually trying to hold him up.  As far as the pick in the endzone is concerned, this isn't jason varitek and anaheim.  in football the receiver or defender has to control it all the way down.  if the ground pops it loose on a pass, its incomplete.  thats what happened and thats what was called.

I have watched 3 games today, and I thought that the officiating was the worst I have seen in a long time. ( Or an Ed Hoculii game, I kid I kid)   ND game was also very poorly officiated.  All is well though, because UNC pulled it out, which makes this northern Indiana guy happy!

Sorry , I will have to disagree with you on that. That was one fo the worst officiated games I have ever seen. The interception that was not called was a pivotal point in the game. Their is no way you can not call that an interception unless you are blind which is obviously what happened in that game. I dont know what you could do to control the ball more , except maybe go old school and use the stickum that Lester Hayes used years ago for the Raiders when he had so many interceptions. The calls on the out of bounds hits were terrible even the announcers knew that. Bottom line is the refs blew that game.

no...bottom line is the pick wasnt a pick.  have you ever heard of the ground causing the fumble?  or keeping control "all the way to the ground"?  i know for a fact because it was reviewed like twenty times in the three games i watched just sunday to make sure the receiver or defender had control of the ball ALL THE WAY TO THE GROUND!  even Big Twelve officials said it was a textbook call.  stop whining about that one.  now, read what i said previously.  i said it WAS a bad call on the late hit because he was trying to hold him up.  i simply made the excuse that any official would have given...erring on the side of caution when it comes to a qb out of bounds.  try again buddy.

His knee went down before the ball came loose. Once the knee goes down, the player is down, and the play is over. Or at least, it SHOULD have been over.
