It shouldn't draw this much attention, but Aaron Rodgers first start as a Green Bay Packer Monday night was as important a preseason game has been to one team in many years.
In order for the post-Brett Favre healing to begin, Rodgers simply needs to keep the Packers afloat and limit terrible mistakes, even though Favre has committed his fair share of those.
How did he fair? Considering the 69,000 in attendance and ESPN cameras watching his every move, Rodgers handled the pressure in impressive fashion. The new Packers QB took 23 snaps, completing 9-of-15 passes with one touchdown and one interception. His interception was not his fault, bouncing off the hands of receiver Chris Francies. However, his touchdown wasn't much of his own doing. Rodgers put wide receiver James Jones in a precarious position, leading him into a Bengals sandwich, but somehow Jones broke the double-tackle, losing his helmet, and then coasting into the endzone from 15 yards out (Video above, last highlight). Outstanding play, considering preseason.
Hopefully the obsessing over Rodgers can simmer for the next few weeks, at least until the real games are played.
I was unimpressed. He had a medicore performance at best... I doubt it's telling of what's to come in the season... The sacks made me cringe...
I don't want him to get injured nor would I wish that on him -- as I am a Packers fan -- no matter how painful it was to watch him last night. But, I see it happening -- and anytime I see him take a hit -- I just hope something isn't broken.
The Brett thing was harder than I thought. I realized I don't have a CLEAR memory of a Packers game that Brett was not playing in. It was so strange. Plus the endless commentary on Brett and the constant comparisons were annoying at best. I hope those die down before the season starts.
This is going to be a long season for me... that's for sure.
Really? I thought he looked pretty good. He showed good poise, and while not all of his throws were spectacular, I think that he threw the ball well overall, and looked as good as you could want at this early point in the preseason.
