Somehow remain a passionate sports fan despite living and dying with the Chicago Cubs and Michigan State athletics. Born in California, grew up in Michigan and went to college at Miami U (Ohio). The debate over the most passionate sports fans in the world isn't remotely close.
Yankee fans are awfully fiery, Canadiens fans are clearly a little batty, the Cameron Crazies befit their moniker and SEC football fans are best described as fervent lunatics. None of these hold a candle to soccer fans, and from my experience, more precisely Italian futbol fanatics.
My apologies to any Columbian soccer fans reading this, I don't have any first hand account, so please don't kill me in a back alley.
I used to be in the gourmet food industry (lame, I know) and would take part in the International Food Show in New York each summer. In 2006, that coincided with the World Cup final between Italy and France. The French may very well love their soccer, but at least they pretended to also care about their businesses. For three hours the Jacob Javitz center turned into a party. No concern for any Italians manning their booths, there was soccer to watch in front of any television possible. Each and every one of them regardless of age, sex, what have you, was more passionate about that game than I've ever been watching any of my favorite teams.
I'd like to think that's healthy on my part, but anyways, I bring up this pointless story because we had what might be the biggest freak out of all time for a soccer announcer. And that's saying something.
They love their soccer ... but probably not as much as this guy.
