Billy Sims Screams "Boomer" Over And Over Again At Sam Bradford's Heisman Trophy Presentation
Someone Tell This Guy That It's Only Cool In Oklahoma. Even Then, It's Dumb, But They Think It's Cool

One of the more obnoxious moments during last night's Heisman Trophy presentation was actually a former winner. After one of the closer Heisman races in recent times, Sam Bradford was announced as the winner, prompting fellow Sooner and Heisman winner Billy Sims (1978) to scream "Boomer". 11 times. Sims was apparently expecting some sort of response, in the form of "Sooner," from a fellow toolbag who thinks that "Boomer Sooner" makes sense, or is something that you can say in public without everyone looking at you and knowing full well that you're a raging lunatic. He finally got it after his 8th and 9th shout, as someone (it sounded like it could have been Bradford) offered up a weak "Sooner," and then another one, with an obviously embarrassed chuckle.

Unfortunately, the video stops as Bradford starts speaking, so all you see is him saying "Umm, wow." What you don't see are his next words, where he said "Billy Sims is a huge toolbag and I almost hope I don't win again next year, because I'm embarrassed to have that idiot supporting me."

Ok, so Sam didn't really say that. But by the look on his face, you can tell he was thinking it.

One can only hope that Billy Sims had a liquid excuse for his stupidity and overbearing obnoxiousness in New York, but it's likely that he is just THAT proud of his fellow Sooner that he thought yelling a nonsensical statement over and over again while standing on a stage in a suit in front of college football's greatest was actually an OK thing to do (pun intended).

Official transcript from the time after Sam Bradford was announced as the Heisman winner, until he took the podium:

Billy Sims: BOOMER!!!
(applause for Bradford, trying to ignore the screaming lunatic)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(more applause, maybe if we ignore him he'll go away)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(applause still)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(more applause, but clearly this guy will not shut up)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(oh God, this is so embarrassing)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(seriously, who invited this guy anyway?)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(maybe someone should just yell "Sooner", maybe that will shut him up)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(ugh... he really isn't going to stop)
Bradford, maybe: "Sooner" (I pray to God this works, because this is really just getting embarrassing)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
Bradford: Ugh... Sooner (please stop, Billy, for the love of God, this is terrible)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(awkward silence)
Sims: BOOMER!!!
(awkward silence)
Sims: Sooner or later, we'll get ya!
awkward laughter)

It looks as ridiculous in print as it sounded at the ceremony. Since Sims did the same thing when Jason White won it in 2003, we can only hope for laryngitis during the next ceremony involving a Sooner, and/or the Heisman folks un-inviting Sims, for being such an embarrassment.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Sadly, Billy's boomer boor act isn't limited to the Heisman stage.  For whatever reasons, at pretty much any OU event he attends, he feels compelled to yell "Boomer!" throughout.  Considering he literally disappeared for awhile in the 90's-early 00's on account of his money problems, perhaps he's just happy to be back amongst the Sooner Nation or showing his love for the folks who helped him get back.  Either way, I think it's time for Billy to tone it down a bit and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, put "Boomer!" on the bench for awhile...

Wow, that's sad that he acts like that.  I wrongly thought it was just some idiot in the audience.  If you were as great as Billy Sims was, you'd think screaming like that wouldn't mean much to you.

Aside from Sims acting like a fool, the Lions were never a joke when he was running the ball.  What a great back.

What's really sad is that he is so attention hungry that he stole someone else's moment.  This was supposed to be bradford's moment, too bad it was overrun by this narcisist.

Oh yea Pat, not everyone here in Tornado Alley thinks it's cool, myself included...

And this from the editorial page of the Daily Oklahoman (a space normally reserved for rants on the evils of the Democratic party):
Would someone please muzzle Billy Sims?
After Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford was announced as the winner of the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, members of the audience stood and applauded as Bradford shook hands with the runnersup, hugged his parents, received congratulations from coach Bob Stoops and then made his way to the stage. All the while Sims, who was on stage with past Heisman winners, could be heard shouting “Boomer!” over and over and over again.
You knew it was coming. Sims began this routine when Jason White won the Heisman in 2003, although that time he hollered it only a couple of times, and it was good for a laugh or two. There weren’t many laughs Saturday night, especially not after the fourth, or fifth, or sixth, or seventh shout from Sims.
Bradford, the ultimate team player, did what he could to bring the embarrassing nonsense to an end, giving a halfhearted reply of “Sooner” as he climbed the steps to the stage, and another one a moment later.
For good measure, Sims let fly with a couple more “Boomers!” before finally piping down.
But only for a moment. Just as Bradford was about to begin his remarks, here came Sims again: “Sooner or later, we’ll get ya!” the 1978 Heisman winner blurted. Hardy har har.
Sam Bradford deserved better. In winning the Heisman as the nation’s top college football player, he represented his team, his school and his state with the sort of class we have come to expect from him. And unfortunately, so did Sims.

billywa, I wasn't even referring to this specific example when I said that. Everyone can agree that this was over the top.

I was referring to the simple term "Boomer Sooner". Everyone outside of Oklahoma thinks it's retarded, whether it's said at the Heisman presentation or at an OU game. When Billy Sims was screaming "Boomer" over and over again, it just made it worse. But when a random fan shouts it at a game in Norman, it's still pretty dumb.

Billy Sims is a native of Texas. He lives in the past. So he is like a college kid enthralled by football. I am annoyed by his chant....but that is just Billy! He gets his vibes from reliving his college days.
