An awful lot of people think that both Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden should retire. And while I can't exactly speak for JoePa, I certainly can for Bowden after I saw this video clip above.
It's Bowden giving a rousing pregame speech before his 'Noles played Boston College last weekend. And by "rousing" I mean "he reads the damn speech off of a notecard while guys fall asleep." I swear, if it got an livelier in the locker room a funeral would break out (thank you, I'll be here all week). By the way, I'm sure you'll be shocked to learn that Florida State lost that game 27-17.
Anyway, I think when it's reached the point where a robot can give a more inspiring speech than you, it probably time to pack in.
Wow, I never thought Bobby Bowden would ever win the "Weekend at Bernie's" award, for the coach who looks alive but really died 5 years ago. I was thinking during his speech that this is what someone says who isn't really coaching their players. Steve Spurrier said in an interview on Saturday that he wouldn't coach forever because he couldn't stand to let the assistants "run the show" like Bowden and Paterno.
He never could coach--he is a manager. How many times do you see him on the sideline with a confused look on his face? His assistants call the game--remember his son? Now he brings in big name assistants and they improved, hum. He's terrible and that speech just confirmed it.
