Brad Hawpe Hit In The Neck With Baseball; Matt Vasgersian Confuses EMT With Donovan McNabb
Nothing Brings Levity To A Potentially Serious Neck Injury Like The Old "All Black Guys Look Alike" Routine.

Brad Hawpe got nailed in the neck with a pick off throw during last night's game between the Rockies and Padres. It was a pretty scary moment, but have no fear.... Matt "F-Bomb" Vasgersian from the MLB Network is here to provide a moment of levity with some good old fashioned racist awkwardness.

As Hawpe was getting carted off the field, Vasgersian had them replay the tape, and asked if the EMT was Donovan McNabb. Ummm... no, Matt. That's not Donovan McNabb. That's just a fat black guy with a head wrap. Sure, that description fits McNabb sometimes too, but are you serious? The producers tried to rescue him, but Matt was having none of it. Way to go, Matt. Anyway... I'll let you make the call, but I really don't even think it's close on this one.

And the Award for Excellence in Comedic Timing Goes to MLB Network's Matt Vasgersian [The Sporting Blog]

MLB Network announces that the Margarita maker in the break room will be removed immediately.

...You don't see it? if Vasgersian had made the peyton Manning joke, than yes it would have been just a bad joke. OBVIOUSLY, he knew it wasn't McNabb, so what he was trying to say was that, like the title of this article states, that all black guys look alike.

Its not racist at all. Here we go, a dumb joke is made and here comes the race card. We will never be all equal as long as we let stupid things such as this be the topic of conversation.

I actually think if McNabb gained weight, that would look like him, and I don't think McNabb takes care of himself in the offseason

I'm not a fan of the race card either, but this was a pretty clear case.

And half of them were drunk and thought they were watching the Mets game.

It'll take them awhile. I'm sure they'll have to track down the insurer, then the broker, then a congress representative who'll determine the price of said margarita maker by cutting off a chicken's head and seeing where its dead body ends up dropping dead on its oversized dart chart. Oh the humanity of having to return items in this horrible economic times!

Maybe he just thought it looked like him.

But there's really no precedent for something like that.

I don't think this is necessarily a racial issue either, but not all conversations about race are about "playing the race card."  That makes it sound like it's not necessary to ever talk about race. There are pathetic bigots out there who deserve ridicule... I think Vasgersian is just tone deaf.  He doesn't realize he's not funny.

I have the luxury of watching 100+ Padres games each season for free...Up untill this season we've had Matt Vasgersian broadcasting our play by play on TV each game. Part of Matt's broadcasting gig has always been to spot someone from the crowd and compare them to another celebrity. If you had been watching the local broadcast of the Padres over the last few years, you'd know Matt does this every single game. In fact, him and Mark "Mud" Grant would do this at least 2-3 times per game...Mark Grant still does it every game...It's a comedy bit, and in no way intended to be racist...Anyone who thinks so is begging to play the race card!  Not to mention Matt does play-by-play for the NFL every Sunday, so him doing a comparison of the EMT to Donovan McNabb is completely understandable....

While it sounds like you have a point, its not the viewers responsibility to know the announcers background, So while after reading what you say I can agree he wasn't trying to be racist, his "comedy" will only make sense to padres fans. Otherwise it does come off badly.

I hear what you're saying...I'd have to agree that his timing was a bit off here. Normally, he would do it during a pitching change or between innings. Mostly when nothing was going on during a game. He tried to be funny this time, but it definitely came at an awkward time! He probably should have saved it for another appropriate moment or during a different highlight.
