Brian Westbrook Screws Over Fantasy Owners, Stops At 1-yard Line

As a formerly proud Brian Westbrook fantasy owner, there aren't words. Streaking to a game-clinching touchdown, the Eagles running back stopped at the 1-yard line. Just hate as this video details (language warning, and no that's not me but the same choice words were used). Apparently it's Jon Runyan who deserves our fantasy owner scorn.
"I wanted to help the team win," Westbrook said. "Jon Runyan told me if I got down to the one to just take a knee and when you see that 6-7, 6-8 load behind you, that's what you do."
You know Runyan's fantasy opponent this week had Westbrook on his team. That's the only plausible explanation. Should this come back to be the deciding factor in my season, and I'm sure many of yours, he'll go down among the most hated players of all time.

(Luckily Purple Jesus is always there to save me)

Please let me know if you have Westbrook and this decision comes back to haunt you. He needs to hear about this from all of us.
Update: Here's a slightly better video, but less editorial audio:

I understand why he did it, but how does that really give them any better of a chance to win than just taking the 6 points?

Westbrook...the anti-Belichick.

If he had scored, the Cowboys would have had a 2% chance of coming back (% pulled out of my ass, but it's some low number greater than zero). It wouldn't have been likely, but it would have been possible. Falling down eliminated that chance entirely, save for a fumble on a kneel-down.

Well, there were 2 minutes left and the Cowboys were out of timeouts. Therefore, the Eagles could kneel three times and end the game, which they did. Why risk something screwy happens once Dallas got the ball back?

A New England fan with a sense of humor about his Patriots?

I sort of agree with you, but the Cowboys somehow pulled that Buffalo win out of their ass so who knows.

I see the logic, but I'd still take the TD. If the rest of your team blows it after that, then they deserve to lose anyway.

I have been calling for years for players to do this in situations as that with which we were presented here, but had I not already won the week in each of the two fantasy leagues in which I have Westbrook, I'd have gone absolutely nuts.  A fair compromise (between, you know, winning the game and pleasing fantasy footballers) might have been for the Eagles, having knelt on first, second, and third downs, to call a timeout with one second left and give Brian a shot at the score.

I've got Westbrook on my team...Thank God for Drew Brees and the New England D.

As a Packers fan.... GO EAGLES!!

And Westbrook did the smart thing.  The cowboys already had a win, against the Bears I believe, where they scored, then got the ball back.  By him doing that, it dropped the small chance the cowboys had to 0.

I've got Westbrook on my fantasy team. When I saw him get in the clear on that run, I was like "Yes!", and than it was more like "Oh".

I THINK I may squeak out the win to make the Super Bowl in my league, but if I lose by 6 or less, that won't be too cool.

I couldn't be too mad at Westbrook though. He's been a total stud this year, without a single dud game. I think his worst outing was 119 total yards with no TD's.

The final 2 players in my playoff game were Romo for me and Westbrook for him. Final score 70-67.  Brian Westbrook was my savior yesterday.

It would have made it a 2 possession game so him scoring wouldn't have mattered. Now if it would have still been a 1 possession game if he score then that would have been a smart play.

I've got a slim lead (3 pts) with Purple Jesus and Greg Olsen going tonight vs my opponent with the Bears D/ST.

Given the Devin Hester factor it's all but a guarantee. BW's TD certainly could have helped.

Perhaps you missed the Dallas-Buffalo game earlier this year when they scored 2x in 1 1/2 minutes.

My team with Westbrook won 104 to 60 thanks to Peyton and Moss having subpar games and neither of us having any MNF players. (big sigh)

I would've gone for the TD... Romo and his thumb rallying the team from a 17-6 defecit? I doubt it. What they could have done, is eat the clock at the 1, and score anyway, hahahaha! Eat the clock until 5 seconds remain, and then stab them with a last second TD.

But hey, they say when there is time on the clock, there is time to score. The goal is to score more points, so screw it-- score the TD!

How could I have missed it...I'm a Bills fan. I wasn't watching the game so I don't know how much time was left, but it was a smart play regardless if they were up by 1 or 100.

Bottom line this was an announcement to the nation that he and Runyan think their defense sucks! There was absolutely no logic in it and anyways since when is Runyan the head coach in Philly? I am of course biased since I am one of the fantasy owners who got screwed out of the championship game because of this stunt (I ended up tied and my bench which included Romo got outscored) but all that aside it was pointless. The Philly D played a great game and deserved the chance to close it out since if not for their performance it would have been a blowout loss. He showed his total disrespect for the defensive players by doing this and showed his disrespect for many fans who have rooted for him all season in Fantasy leagues and in my opinion proved he has zero class!

That is ridiculous!  First, you make a comment like "his disrespect for many fans who have rooted for him all season in Fantasy leagues..."   Let's see, they don't really care if his team wins as long as they get lots of fantasy points.  Why should he care about this?  He is not disrespecting his defense.  He simply made it possible to run out the clock.  It is no different than a QB taking a knee to run out the clock.  No logic?  How about securing a win for his team?  How about thinking about your team rather than personal stats?  Westbrook is one of the classiest guys in the NFL.  Get a clue before you post stupid comments.

After watching the video again, I think Westbrook actually crossed the goal line before he got hit. If you look, most of his legs cross the goal line then he gets hit.

It doesn't matter...the ball never crossed the line.

True. I am just glad that I didn't need him this week to win my fantasy playoffs.
