CC Sabathia Says He Came To New York To Avoid The Expectations In Milwaukee
Great Sign: CC Sabathia Has No Clue About The New York Media And Fans. None Whatsoever.

CC Sabathia is a great pitcher. He really is. There is not a single pitcher in all of baseball right now who has such a great combination of the desire and ability to win as he does. Not only has he been the best pitcher in baseball for the past 2 years, he also showed last season with the Brewers that he would gladly do whatever it took to win. If his team needed him to pitch on 3 days rest, 5 starts in a row, he'd do it. And he would pitch as well as anyone else.

Another thing that may have been revealed by Sabathia's willingness to tax his arm is his naive stupidity. Allowing the Brewers to run him into the ground in a contract year was probably the most idiotic thing Sabathia possibly could have done.

Thanks to the Yankees' deep pockets and willingness to pay him more than any other pitcher in the history of baseball, he didn't suffer any consequences of overworking his arm. Yet. But the latest sign that Sabathia might not be the brightest bulb on the tree was seen in his recent press conference, where he said that one of the reasons he chose the Yankees was the fact that they wouldn't have the same expectations that they have for him in Milwaukee, after his incredible second half there.

"That was definitely a factor in my decision, and something I thought about, too, you know, if I went somewhere else, they would expect me to do what I did in the last, second half in Milwaukee, and that's kind of unrealistic. I feel like I'm going to pitch great, I'm going to pitch well, but I'm not going to be able to match stats like that."

Ahem, excuse me? If you are concerned about expectations, then New York is the very last place you would ever want to play. The New York fans and media are notoriously unrealistic in their expectations of their players. And with the biggest contract ever for a pitcher, expectations for CC will be astronomical. If ARod got booed during an MVP season, then what will happen when Sabathia had a rough outing and gives up 4 runs to the Red Sox? He's 2-4 in his career against the Red Sox, and if he continues that in the Bronx, the fans won't tolerate it for long.

This is a great sign for Yankee haters, since it looks like the concerns about CC's mental makeup and his ability to pitch in a big city like NY might actually have some serious grounds. We'll see how long he lasts before the boo birds get in his head.

Wow, Pat you really hate the Yankees don't you?  This is a reach if I ever saw one.  He didn't say he thinks the expectations are lower here, he said that no one should expect him to replicate what he did the second half with the Brewers.  He's being realistic about it which is probably what the NY media and the fans want.

Man I hate it when people make me have to defend a Yankee.
Yes, I do hate the Yankees.

But let's be realistic: NY fans WILL expect the world from him. That's just how they are. He just accepted the largest contract ever for a pitcher... anything less than spectacular will be considered a failure.

I have to agree with Pat here...Expectations are huge in NY...Unless you are Joe Girardi then failure is fine

And it looks like there is going to be plenty of room in his head for those boo birds.

Actually they are going to expect more than the world from him, but that's not the point.  The point is you said he said something he did not in order to call into question his mental make-up.  You are searching here.  All evidence points to Sabathia being one of the toughest competitors, and most level-headed and forthright fellas in the sport.  What you did here is just shoddy reporting.  Personal responsibility carries over to blogging to.  Your article is a flat out misrepresentation.

Really? I reported his exact quote. Everything else was my opinion, and I never tried to present it as anything but that. All evidence points to him being a tough competitor, but all evidence also points to him having a losing record against the Red Sox, and an ERA well above his career average. Think that will fly in the Bronx? Of course not. And if he thinks the fans in NY won't expect exactly what they saw from him in July and August of last year, he's either naive or stupid.

As it should be when you accept a contract making that kinda money.  As the "paying public", I expect for someone to live up to their salary - that is what is expected of me at work, why would I expect less in an athlete?

That is comical !  The pressure to win there is higher than anywhere else in ALL of baseball.  He will figure it out the first tim ehe gets booed in Yankee Stadium for giving up a home run at the wrong time.

Being A Indians fan, I love all the C.C Did for Cle, also I hate the Yankees, so its kinda of a love hate situation, I hope he does well, but expect boo's when you come to Progressive field, Yes Braylon Edwards, all CLeveland Fans boo, just ask Jobert Belle, Manny, Thome, Bartolo Colon, all the talent we lost at some point in time, I dont expect C.C to throw any baseballs at the fans, and most likely he will get the least amount of boo's out of all the others I listed above..

Why would he get booed though?  He was traded before the end of the year last year and the Indians didn't even make him an offer this off season.  That's just plain ignorance if the Cleveland faithful boo him, especially if he did as much for Cleveland as you say he did.  I just don't get fans sometimes.  Has the entitlement of NYY fans made its way west?

You can answer your first question about why he get's booed with one simple answer.  If your not a Yankee fan and one of your players goes to the Yankees, then in that persons mind that player sold out and must now be booed.  That is what on another poll is called a bandwagon fan.  They are the few million fans who suddenly were lifetime Bull fans after Jordan & Company started winning champonships as well as those who support any team in the opposing dugout across from the Yankees.  Their headquarters are in Fenway Park by the way.

You answered the question why would he get booed for me, like you said, easy, you go from one team to another, regardless booes will come out, now if I make it to a game where he is pitching, me personally wont boo, I got thousands of others that will do it for me..
