I realize Citizen's Bank Park only has a few feet on Williamsport, PA, but this ball was still smoked. His 2nd home run of the night, Chase Utley now leads the majors in home runs.
You'll notice Joe Morgan offers up a rather bold statement on Utley, but it might have been the most accurate words that came out of his mouth all night. The Phils second baseman may very well end up the best hitter at his position in history. I don't have a handy history record book with me, but I suspect a 2nd baseman has never hits 40 home runs. Chase will do it this year.
Turns out neither of his home runs were the biggest of the night. Pedro Feliz hit the game winner in the bottom of the 7th to finally grab a win in this series. Phillies 5, Mets 4.
Eric Gagne reminds Brewers he's Eric Gagne After Milwaukee scored two go-ahead runs in the top of the 10th, it was time for the newly acquired "closer" to do his work.
First batter: Edwin Encarnacion home run.
Second: Paul Bako hooooome run.
Third: Scott Hatteberg walk.
That was it for him. Salomon Torres came on and subsequently gave up the game winning single to Ken Griffey Jr. To Gagne's defense, he was pitching in his 4th game in a row. Ned Yost should know better than that. Brewers still won 2 of 3. Reds 4, Brewers 3.
Alfonso Sorianwho? I'm not going to be an idiot and say the Cubs are better without their $136 million man - even though they are 5-1 - but the offense has exploded on the north side because his presence doesn't force Lou Piniella to bad him in leadoff. Hopefully... finally, Lou should realize this as the Cubs scored 9, 12, 13 and 13 runs this week without him and Reed Johnson and Ryan Theriot prospering at the top of the order. Cubs 13, Pirates 6.
When the Quad Monster attacks Both Alex Rodriguez and Chipper Jones - who's been crushing the ball - had to leave Sunday's games with quad injuries. A-Rod is likely to miss at least a few games ... Chipper appears OK, although we'll see if his ridiculous .458 batting average takes a hit.
I was watching this same game on AFN in the ship's laundry room a couple hours ago, and I was thinking the exact thing. Apparently I'm not crazy for thinking that Utley might wind up being arguable the greatest ever at his position.
One of the most telling stats was his yearly batting average, which has gone up considerably every year.
.266, .291, .309, .332 ... this guy's going to be very good for a long time.
