In case you're wondering who will be taking over for Kevin Durant as a must-watch, will-dominate freshman it's Derrick Rose of the Memphis Tigers. The only difference is that Rose has some very good teammates which makes John Calipari's team a favorite to win the national title.
College basketball technically got underway last night with Memphis taking on Tennessee-Martin and Derrick Rose introduced himself with authority. Here are the highlights from ESPN. In case that wasn't enough, check out these back to back plays in the Illinois State Finals. He's sick.
In case you're wondering we do plan to kick off a string of college basketball previews today and throughout the next couple weeks while the big boys take on cupcakes. If you have some thoughts you'd like to share send me a note. Chuck23 will be chiming in on the Billy Gillispie led Kentucky Wildcats later today who tip it off tonight in Lexington.
The only part of your post I'll take exception with is your implication that Durant had nobody around him last year; that's just not true, as Texas had and still has a ton of talent they will be trotting out every night. CDR is better than anyone on 2006-2007 Texas(besides Durant), but Augustin, James, Abram, et al aren't too shabby either.
I agree that "this year's Durant" (there won't be an equal, obviously) could be Rose, but I think there's a pretty good chance that Beasley and maybe even Gordon have better freshman seasons. Only time will tell.

I don't mean to imply Durant had "nobody" but I'll take CDR, Dorsey over anyone KD played with last year. In my opinion Augustin held Durant back with his forced shots, too much dribbling and failure to realize Durant needs the ball.

Ah, your original comment makes more sense, then. Agree to disagree, I guess. I watched a lot of Texas last year and I thought Augustin was great and kept defenses honest so that they couldn't solely focus on stopping Durant. His ability to drive often collapsed the defenses, giving Durant a little more room, although he probably never needed it. I also felt that Durant got the ball an awfully good amount, although I agree that there were times Augustin should have looked for him a little more in certain situations.
As far as Dorsey goes, I think you'll see this year that Damion James is a very similar player to Dorsey and has more overall talent, although Dorsey is still the better rebounder. It was just hard to showcase anyone in that Texas offense last year, when it was all Durant, Abrams, and Augustin, all the time.
Edit: I just looked at last year's stats, and in about the same number of minutes (25) Dorsey averaged around 8.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg as a junior; James put up about 7 ppg and 7.5 rpg as a freshman with Durant on his team, taking up lots of rebounds and shots. Sorry, back to your regularly-scheduled programming.

Fair enough. I agree James and Dorsey are fairly similar. I feel like I watched a ton of Texas last year as well, I swear they were on every Monday night for two straight months. Anywho ... I look at the last game Texas played and there were WAY too many possessions where Durant didn't even touch the ball and thus never got into a rythym. Augustin was too busy dribbling around the perimeter and trying to create when nothing was there. Forcing shots, etc. Perhaps that's coaching. I guess I just wasn't a real big fan. Looking forward to seeing his improvement and he'll probably be more comfortable now that he's the man.
I'm glad to hear about the previews coming out. I was thinking that the start of college basketball wasn't getting nearly the fanfare that college football season got.
