Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins Despite Passing the Pace Car

Did Jr. Get An Assist From NASCAR?
by gearhead

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won for the first time in 76 races yesterday at Michigan. It was in doubt to the very end, because nobody knew if he had enough fuel to make it. He did, just barely. Fine. A fuel mileage win is just as legit as a "normal" win.

There was one problem though. The race had a late caution, and had to go a Green-White-Checkered Finish. During the caution, Jr. was gunning the engine, then turning it off and coasting in an attempt to save fuel. While he was coasting though, he passed the pace car. This video is the only thing I could find of him doing it, but it wasn't the only time he passed it  during this caution.

My question is how is that not a black flag? Passing the pace car is a penalty. Instead, Jr. was warned, apparently multiple times. I'm not the only one asking about it.

For a league that still gets the occasional rumblings of fixes and preferential treatment, this is not the kind of situation they need. Not that they haven't brought it on themselves in this case with this dubious decision.

If David Stern were the commissioner of NASCAR, he would have suspended Jr. then have let Tony Stewart ram the pace car the following week with no repercussions.

Sorry, but after seeing it on tv, and reading more about it today, NASCAR has become a bigger joke to me than it already was.  If this isn't "fixing" a race to appease a certain fan base, I don't know what is.  He broke a rule, intent doesn't matter.  See the guys that speed in the pits, do they intend to do it?  No, but yet they are penalized.  Seeing this has made NASCAR officially my last thing to watch on TV.  I think MrNFL hit the nail on the head, it's all about the money.

Just to let everyone know, this is nothing to do with Junior (note I didn't even mention how big a Jr. win would be for NASCAR). It has to deal with NASCAR not enforcing their rules, and if they're not enforcing those rules, it opens the door for "fixing" speculation, regardless of who won the race.

I agree, but being that rule has not ever been enforced, they cant step up and do it now!
Or could they?

Rules should be enforced.

Umm, of course they should start enforcing it. Admit they've been letting it go for too long (assuming that is has, which non-NASCAR fans such as myself wouldn't know) and start cracking down. It's not that hard.

Sorry in advance to Jr. fans.... Even if he finished 40th he would still be 3rd in points.

NASCAR has 2 sets of rules. One for Earnhardt and one for everyone else.

Tell me you dont really believe that!
I have heard this about Petty, Sr, Jr, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie, Tony, Kyle, Even Kahne 2 years ago!! How many favorites do they have, and if everyone is a favorite, is that not equal?
LOL

Nascar does their best to make a EVEN playing field!!
OF COURSE they are not going to take money out of thier own pockets, but I have watched every race for years, and yes I think time to time things arent fair, but if you look at the big picture, IT REALLY IS FAIR.

It's unfortunate that some rules are enforced and others are not, regardless of the driver... In my opinion this particular rule is not subjective and "intent" is not a relevant exception to it.
