Drogba Slap On Vidic

Manchester United Wins Champions League, You Can All Go Back To Ignoring Soccer Now

Didier Drogba decided to pull a poor man's Zidane - or if you prefer, an A-Rod Special - in the Champions League Final that could have very well cost Chelsea the title. I'm not sure what the hell he was thinking as he slapped Nemanja Vidic in the face right before the game was about to go to the penalty shootout, but it wasn't smart. And that would be being EXTREMELY kind.

Just so you understand, Drogba getting ejected when he did would be the equivalent of Tom Brady getting ejected during the final two minute drive of a tie game at the Super Bowl. Times 10. So, uh, not good. I'm sure Chelsea fans will let him know that.

Anyhow, the game was reasonably exciting, even for non-soccer fans. Cristiano Ronaldo scored first for Man U before Frank Lampard knocked in the equalizer for Chelsea. The game went in to overtime extra time before going to a penalty shootout.

But Drogba's boneheaded slap to Vidic's face made him unavailable for the shootout, which naturally Chelsea lost 6-5.

So yeah, that's your one reasonably detailed soccer post for the year that doesn't involve video of a goalie getting nailed in the face by a shot. Hope you enjoyed it.

You're crazy!  Stop paying attention?  Euro 2008 starts in just over two weeks.  And I'm still not certain I like the fact that Drogba was ejected for his "slap."  I've seen similar in other big games that were left with just a yellow, or nothing at all.
For instance:  Scholes flying headbutt in the first half, while not intentional could have done a lot more injury, and he only received a yellow for it.  Anyway, I found the game to be excellent and wish more games were played with that much passion and desire.

This was a highly entertaining game with drama to match. Sure the score was 1-1 and decided on PK's but it was great "football".

I would pay more attention but Ireland and Northern Ireland did not qualify AGAIN. Also with out England whats the fun, because I love seeing the English fans go nuts.

As long as .500 is good enough for first place in the West, I'm still down with MLS too.

Love of the game isn't enough to watch?  Besides, with 8 of the top 10 and 10 of the top 15 FIFA ranked teams in the tournament is more than enough reason to watch for me.  Of course, I'm a soccer fanatic, so I'm a tad bit biased.  Also, Group C is a huge group of hell and those matches should be awesome to see.

I will still try to catch the action. I just wonder if this year will be a repeat of 2004 where Greece shocked everyone.
