Tim Donaghy may be in the NBA's past, but it's still the same ol' Association. A failure to do anything about egregious flopping has resulted in another great NBA playoff game being ruined.
Andrei Kirilenko opts to not fight off a Luis Scola screen and instead pretend the Rockets rookie's wrist (say that three times) was capable of sending him into the 1st row. This can't happen. Let me rephrase. This CAN happen, but the NBA officials can't call it a foul on Scola.
I've been arguing for a couple years now that this garbage needs to be called a technical foul. Understood that it's a very difficult call to make and puts even more pressure on the officials to make this judgment call at the end of a game.
But really, would it be that difficult?
It's not like flopping runs rampant across all NBA players. We know who they are.
The NBA has failed to do anything to this end. Simply acknowledging it's bad for the game would be a start. Proactively educating officials when and when not to make these calls would be sufficient. Technicals would eliminate it.
I don't blame the Ginobili's and Kirilenko's of the NBA for continuing to resort to these soccer techniques. With current state of officiating, it works. No reason to stop until it adversely affects your team's outcome.
However, let's concede all of this could have been moot had Tracy McGrady shown up for an NBA Playoffs 4th quarter. Cough. Cough.
Just in case you were wondering - no, this wasn't Kirilenko's worst flop ever. This was.
