Ariel Helwani of Fanhouse talked to boxing promoter Bob Arum at Yankee Stadium during the press conference for Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto's upcoming fight. Arum discussed a wide variety of topics, including a potential fight at Yankee Stadium, the possibility of a Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight, and his thoughts on mixed martial arts.
Some of Arum's comments are way over the top. They start at being "just ridiculous", and travel all the way into the "offensive" range. Some of the more priceless ones:
"Mayweather does not entertain. Outside the ring, yeah, he shoots up cars and does other things like that, and he entertains. But in the ring, he's not an entertaining fighter."This was during his attempt to say that a Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight wouldn't sell a lot of Pay-per-views. Judging by past PPV numbers for both Mayweather and Pacquiao, this couldn't be further from the truth. Also, I have never heard of Mayweather shooting up cars. That seems like something that we would have heard about, doesn't it?
Later, he discussed MMA, and how boxing and MMA aren't true competitors, since the fans who follow boxing are far different from the ones who follow MMA:
"UFC are a bunch of skinhead white guys watching people in the ring who also look like skinhead white guys ... 90% of the people in the audience wear tattoos."I'm not sure where he gets his information. While there is no denying the fact that such individuals do exist, it's inaccurate and ignorant to make blanket statements like that about an entire sport and its fan base.
If boxing is indeed dying, then it's not because of MMA. It's not because there are no exciting fights left, and it's not because the heavyweight division has no real superstar. It will be because of dinosaurs like Bob Arum, who run their mouth, and have no clue what they're talking about.
