The Meteoric Rise Of Forrest Griffin Continues Unabated

In what would probably be considered only a mild upset, Forrest Griffin beat reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Rampage Jackson by unanimous decision in a five-round slug fest in Las Vegas.

Both fighters absolutely brought fit or the full five rounds, with Rampage landing a wicked uppercut in the first round before Griffin landed a crushing kick to Rampage's knee in the second round. It was Griffin's second round shot to Rampage's knee that changed the course of the fight, as Rampage simply wasn't the same after.

There's always some disdain for fights that go to a decision, but this was about the best fight money can buy that didn't wind up ending in a knockout. Griffin won on all three judges scorecards.

For Griffin, his career has been on an incredible rise since he became the original winner of The Ultimate Fighter, a TV show which rewards its winner with a UFC contract. Griffin has already beaten Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Hector Ramirez, Chael Sonnen, Stephan Bonnar, Jeff Monson, and now Rampage Jackson. That's a murderers row of fighters right there.

Anyway, if UFC is smart, and they are, they'll definitely get a rematch between Rampage and Griffin. A lot of people will want to see that.

Since when does the decision of a close title fight go to the challenger. I thought Rampage won the first round and Griffin owned the second. But the rest of the fight was not dominated by Griffin. If anything Rampage still landed better shots, and he is the champion. I believe challengers need to take the belt, not have it given to them by the judges. It was a little sketchy to me.

Did you actually watch the fight? I might be a little biased, because I'm a huge Griffin fan, but I genuinely think that there's no way you could justify giving Rampage the decision. The fact that it's a title fight shouldn't matter. If the challenger wins the fight, then he wins the fight. And Forrest definitely won that one. I think Rampage won the first round, Forrest took the second (which could have been scored 10-8), the 3rd and 4th rounds were toss-ups, and Forrest won the 5th.

Jackson said after the fight, "He whooped my a$$."  When the champion says he got whooped, the judges didn't give the belt to the challenger.
