Mandatory Credit: Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY SportsSince May 26, the Giants have been without their center fielder and lead off hitter.  Before going down with a strained left hamstring, Angel Pagan was the Giants spark plug despite hitting just .262 so far this season.

But a new face has emerged for the Giants in Pagan's absence.  Rookie Juan Perez has impressed the Giants brass and fans with his bat, tallying seven hits in 16 at bats--good for a .438 batting average.  But his biggest impact has been on defense.  The 26-year old has speed, a cannon, and absolutely no fear.  This play was in the first inning of his first major league game against Paul Goldschmidt and the Diamondbacks.  It was his fist ever major league put out.  Welcome to bigs, Juan.

Now that he's shown us the kind of ground he can cover and his willingness to put his body on the line, let's take a look at his arm.  In just his third game, against Pittsburgh, he gunned Jordy Mercer down at third after Mercer attempted to test the rookie on a sac fly.

Then, last night against San Diego, he let the cannon loose again.  Enjoy.

So that's three highlights in six games for the young outfielder.  Pagan says he's ahead of schedule but there is still no timetable for his return.  Perez has been hitting at the bottom of the lineup, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Bruce Bochy give him a shot at leadoff sometime soon.  He's been a pleasant surprise and now is as good a time as any to see just how far the Giants can ride the Perez wave.

The Giants current injury situation has forced the organizations hand and they've had to call up some new players, but I expect Perez to stick around for a while, even after Pagan's back in lineup.
