Henry Surtees Killed in Freak Formula Two Accident Sunday

Henry Surtees, the son of 1964 Formula One World Champion John Surtees, died tragically in a race at Brands Hatch in England on Sunday. Surtees was just 18 years old and was coming off a podium place (third) in a Formula 2 race on Saturday when the freak accident occurred.

Another driver, Jack Clark, spun into a wall on the left side of the track. When he hit the wall, one of his tires came loose, and flew off the car. It headed directly for Surtees' vehicle and struck him on the head, knocking him unconscious. Surtees' car, uncontrolled, then headed straight off the track and directly into an oncoming wall.

Medics extracted him from the car and he was airlifted to Royal London hospital, but the injuries he sustained were too great, and medical authorities later pronounced him dead. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Surtees family. Please be advised that the following video, via Sports Rubbish, while not necessarily graphic, does contain the accident described above.

Remember Aerton Senna. If I remember correctly, a tire hit him the head too.
