High school kicker Kip Smith, from Legacy High School in Broomfield, Colorado was given the opportunity to make history, and he capitalized. His team made a fair catch at their own 43-yard line with 12 seconds left in the first half, and that allowed them to take a free kick from the 43. Smith teed it up like a kickoff, and put it through the uprights with room to spare.
By rule, NFL kickers can actually do this as well, but the opportunity is extremely rare. It would require a fair catch within field goal range, and the clock waning down to the point that it's not even worth making another play. But Kip Smith has actually done it, and kicked a field goal that was 4 yards longer than the NFL record.
He has already committed to Minnesota, and let's hope that we see some similarly ridiculous kicks when he gets to college.

A field goal may be scored by a placekick or the now very rare drop kick. The ball must pass "through the uprights", that is, over a crossbar that is 10 feet off the ground and between upright posts that are 18 feet 6 inches (5.6 m) apart, to count, and the kick must not be a kickoff or a free kick following a safety. A field goal can still be good even if the ball hits an upright or the crossbar. The rules of the particular sanctioning authority may impose additional requirements.

Thanks for sharing awesome kick I am sure his parents are proud, as they should be. 3 points could be the difference between a win and a loss! Count it, sweet!

Ummm... you get 3 points for a field goal, and you get 0 points for a kickoff. So this is a field goal.

They don't make it to the end zone because they don't kick from the 40 yard line anymore. I am not saying it wasn't a great kick but you tell me what is the difference between a kick off and a field goal.

in some division close to 8 man football maybe. A Field goal is done live with the defense rushing the kicker with a snapper and holder. just another kick off.

Sweet kick. I know football players sometimes don't count kickers as part of the team, but it makes you feel great as a fan if you know your kicker can make long field goals under pressure.

I definitely think this kid deserves more credit than y'all are giving him, regardless how he kicked it the point is that he kicked it. This is record setting kick and deserves to be.

Technically speaking, they got 3 points for it. So... that's a field goal.

I disagree completely. off a Tee or not its still a fieldgoal, and the kid should be congratulated - not condemened because it wasn't a "traditional" field goal. the fact is, there are a lot of kickers that cant event kick it into the endzone in college or the NFL, so that makes it that much more special.

The ball was on the 43 yard line we had two kickers we faced in high school that were able to kick it through the goal post on Kick offs from the 40 which is close to what this kid did. That is also the reason they backed up the kick off spot because the kickers were getting more distance on the kick offs. Great kick off though.

That is a good Kick off not a field goal get real you don't have to snap the ball there is no one rushing the ball that is a total joke!!!!!

regardless of if it was off a Tee, the ground, a Buick Skylark....the fact he hit that fieldgoal, at the distance it was, is phenominal.

It may be a record, but really, the kid was kicking off a tee, for heaven's sakes. Let's see this kid kick one without a tee or half a foot & then we can talk about him & Tom Dempsey & Jason Elam.

The Cowboys will draft him. That's what we do. Draft kickers.
