Home Run Derby Flashback: Willie Mays vs Mickey Mantle In 1959
A Look At When The Derby Was At Its Best

During summer break as a kid I could always count on one quality TV show each day: the old-school home run derby.

Filmed at "Wrigley Field" in Los Angeles all of the major league stars, and now legends, competed head-to-head in a nine-inning battle. THIS was classic stuff.

There's a myriad of reasons these derbies were better than today's glorified, ESPN drenched telecast. Namely, Mark Scott > Chris Berman. But aside from that, I love the head-to-head nine inning battle. Notice how these events never seemed to screw up the sluggers swing. *cough*A-Rod*cough*

The best battle in this TV series was clearly Mickey Mantle vs Willie Mays in 1959. Enjoy, and while you're getting a mouthful of Berman going back, back, back, back ... feel free to take yourself back, back, back to better home run derby days.

This is great! I remember seeing a lot with Hank Aaron...The way this video footage was edited is really cool being it was the late 50's. You get chance to see Mays and Mantle a bit more personally than you would have in a standard broadcast of an MLB game at that time. Today, our favorite players can be found all over the Internet and TV in several different media forms.

What I find interesting as I've watched these is how ballplayers back them seemed so much more real. You could really tell that "The Mick" was a good old farmboy, etc. I find them so much more refreshing than the "canned" quotes we get from ballplayers today. Also it was great to see the real stars of that era participating.

Netflix has the videos available on demand so the can be wateched anytime.
