It's National Sportsmanship Day: Top 10 Sports Cheap Shots
READ MORE:
Who knew? Apparently it's National Sportsmanship Day where we're supposed to celebrate being cordial with our rivals and encourage good behavior on the field of play. That's no fun. Instead, how about 10 of the worst cheap shots in sports:

1. Is doesn't get much worse than this. An Uruguay basketball player decides to settle his dispute with an official by knocking him out cold and nearly killing him.

2. Mike Tyson bites off a chunk of Evander Holyfield's ear. This was the day I refused to ever pay for a boxing match again.

3. No list of this nature is complete without the debacle that continues to be Tonya Harding.  Harding and her husband at the time hired a hitman to take out Nancy Kerrigan's knee before an event in Detroit.

4. Todd Bertuzzi sucker punches Steve Moore. Sadly, Moore has yet to return to hockey as a result.

5. More hockey, of course. Chris Simon taking his stick to the face of Ryan Holliweg. Simon was ultimately suspended 25 games.

6. Eagles' Sav Rocca gets welcomed to the NFL.

7. This isn't as egregious as most on this list, but it's funny. Washington's Tim Morriss drills Alfred Aboya in the face on an inbounds play.

8. Captain of the All-Sportsmanship Team, Zinedine Zidane headbutts Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup after he reportedly made some comments about his family.

9. Virginia Offensive lineman Brad Butler gets abused by Boston College's Matthias Kiwanuka all day and decides to go after his bad right ankle after the whistle.

10. We needed at least one middle finger. Joe Glenn guarantees victory over Utah. Didn't go well. The Utes run up the score and get an onside kick with a 43-0 lead and Glenn responds with the one finger salute.

There are more than a handful of others that should make this list, namely Kermit Washington taking out Rudy Tomjanovich, but there doesn't appear to be video online. I'll let you speculate on what others could be including among the worst examples of sportsmanship.

Happy National Sportsmanship Day!

Bertuzzi should never have been allowed back in the NHL.

What about all the sportsmanship and camaraderie that was displayed at the Palace at Auburn Hills when Pacers and Pistons attack.

Or

When Barrett sucker punched A.J. back in 2006.

Oh c'mon, we all know that white baseball players never do anything wrong.  They were just showing their "passion".

Let alone be paid a ridiculous amount of money by a team that could do MUCH better by keeping any one of a number of great players they got rid of to free up cap room.

yeah, bertuzzi

it still sickens me every time i see that video - and crawford just smirking on the bench as granato goes nuts

bertuzzi should have been banned from the league, along with crawford....the canucks franchise should have received a lot more penalties from the league

just totally ridiculous

Think if they wanna crack down on these hits, that players like betuzzi makes, then link his suspension, if it injures a player like moore, to the length the player is gone from the game. How many defenders would think about trying to cripple a player then? Not many.
