I brought this up earlier today, but wanted to reiterate my frustration and share the video in case you missed it.
Washington desperately needed a big win for their coach Ty Willingham and just for the program in general which has struggled mightily over the last five years. With the 15th ranked BYU Cougars in town, emotions were high in hopes of pulling off a big upset.
Down seven points with 3:31 remaining, sophomore quarterback Jake Locker orchestrated a 17 play, 76 yard touchdown drive capped by his 3 yard run with :02 seconds remaining. Understandably thrilled and caught up in the emotion, Locker celebrated by tossing the ball up into the air. You've seen this type of celebration before with no issues. Somehow, on the heels of the NCAA pressuring referees to eliminate all celebrations, the end zone official called a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of Locker.
You've got to be kidding.
Inevitably, the much longer extra point kick was blocked and BYU went on to win 28-27. This has to be stopped. Locker didn't do the worm in the end zone, showing up the Cougars. He didn't use the football as if it were a beer can and shotgun it. He didn't do the electric slide away from his teammates. He simply scored a big touchdown, tossed the ball straight up in the air and celebrated with his teammates.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Nothing. Football is an emotional sport and turns out, sometimes people get excited.
Next the NCAA will come up with some kind of excessive high five penalty, or eliminate the butt slap, saying it makes the suits uncomfortable. Can we please let these athletes celebrate within reason?
I agree. Just because it is a rule. It should not be enforced. Like the blocking in the back. Come on. the Refs should ignore that rule as well. Seriously as I understand item C under excessive celebrating.. the player must drop the ball to the ground or give the ball to an offical. SDo did that happen? NO. Should the rule be changed to provide more leeway... probably. Should the Ref have called the penalty... Yes.. I for one do not the ref making judgement calls.. several people are advocating that stance...
Straight BS call! So what refs, he threw the ball up in the air. I don't know anyone who could have contained their emotions after scoring a touchdown in the final seconds like the way he did.
The call was great. Locker tossed the ball 30 or 40 feet in the air. You can't do that and get away with it. Then BYUI went and did what they had to in order to win the game. Go Cougars!!!
