We're a tad late getting this one up, but I felt that it was definitely worth watching, for anyone who may not have heard about it. The NBA Slam Dunk Contest was last weekend, but there was also the NBDL Dunk Contest. That's for the guys who aren't quite good enough to make the NBA, but are still good players in their own rite.
Some of these guys are players who have NBA-level talent, but lack a well rounded game. They're really good at one thing, but just can't seem to master another facet of the game. This makes the NBDL Dunk Contest even better than the NBA version. Because while these guys aren't exactly the best shooters, dribblers, passers or defenders in the world, the guys who show up at the dunk contest are quite possibly THE best dunkers in the world.
Yes, better than Dwight Howard, Nate Robinson, LeBron James, etc. That's right. I said it. Case in point: James White:
Remember Dwight Howard's free throw line dunk? It was great. It really was. But White's was better. He took off from completely behind the line, and he REALLY threw it down. He wasn't even leaning towards the basket like some guys do. That's not even close to his best dunk, either.
Last year at a dunk contest in Turkey, White put on a ridiculous show, including 3-4 different free throw line dunks, including a windmill and one between the legs.
Yes, that's what I said. He did a between-the-legs dunk from the free throw line. Watch for it at about the 4:45 mark in this video:
Let's hope James White gets his game together and makes it back into the NBA. He played in 6 games for the Spurs in the 06-07 season, and is trying to work his way back. I'm hoping he does. Next year's dunk contest between Dwight Howard, King James, Nate Robinson and James "Flight" White could be the best ever.
