In most of these shifts, the second baseman will move to his left and cover what would be a gap between the 1st baseman. The shortstop would then cover second base, leaving the third baseman to deal with the entire area between 2nd and 3rd.
It always amazes me these professional hitters can't just simply change their stance and just make enough contact to spray a double to the left field.
Last night, the Orioles Brian Roberts dropped all the way back to mid-right field, while the O's right fielder Nick Markakis was essentially at the wall.
Jason Giambi clearly wasn't impressed and somehow dropped a rope in between Roberts and Markakis, and as he rounded 1st, offered up his opinion of the shift to the second baseman. Check out Kevin Millar's reaction in the video above.
