In the first full Saturday of nothing but college hoops action, we had some great games and one really wild moment during the Providence/Marquette game.
With around 17 minutes left, Jeff Xavier of Providence took the ball and drove into the lane. Xavier went up for the short jumper but when he elevated he ran into Joseph Fulce's elbow. Fulce caught him right above the eye but a foul wasn't called, as there shouldn't have been. Jonathan Kale picked up the miss and was fouled on the put back while Xavier laid on the ground in pain. The Providence coaching/training staff then came out and helped Xavier off the floor and play resumed with Kale at the line. As Kale hit the first free throw, Jeff Xavier's brother Johnathan decided to stick up for his little brother and proceeded to hop over the Providence bench and confront the ref face-to-face without anyone stopping him or even getting in his way.
For some odd reason Jeff Xavier was heard screaming and cursing at Marquette players as his eye swelled shut and he was being taken to the locker room.
In the post Malice at the Palace era we're in, how in the world does anyone get onto the court without anyone even stepping in his way? The only other time I can remember a fan getting onto the court without anyone trying to stop him was last year when some fan came across the floor to give LeBron a high five.
Really wild stuff and I guess that also means that you don't mess with Jeff Xavier or his family. Oh, and Marquette won the game by a score of 91-82.
I've gotta admit I watched that replay several times and every time I watched to see when he actually got hit in the face. Finally after about the fifth time I guess I would conclude the defender's elbow (the one without the sleeve) may have got him in the face. But this is ridiculous! Shouldn't there be someone from security behind both benches?
My explanation of it- If you watch it I think Jeff Xaviers mom, dad, and brother were allowed to come from the stands to look at Xavier who looked like he just got his eye ripped out. Any other time security would of stopped him. Then when he was at the bench he just hopped over and was on the court. Then he threw a hissy fit. No way some random fan would ever get to the court from the upper level. Unless you ran a 4 flat 40 yard dash.
I've been to a lot of college games, even at the NCAA Tournament it seems relatively easy to make it on the court, it just rarely happens. In the NFL you have security looking at the crowd the entire game, this is not the case in NCAAB. If this continues to happen they will have to significantly up security, but they do need a guard or two at least to cover the benches and a couple more just surveying the court and making sure nothing like that happens.
your conclusion is wrong hardy boy... if you watched the video completely, #21 marquette's left finger almost poked xavier's right eye out, ripped apart his eye lid while raising his hands to defend him... #21 marquette is even picking out xavier's skin and blood from his fingernails and wiping it on his shirt while he's walking back to the bench.. it was not intentional, but a foul should have been called...
