Breaking news out of the Yankee Brass meetings is that Joe Torre has turned down the offer to return as manager.

Details are just coming out, but plenty more to come obviously. Discuss.

Update: It's good to see ESPN had the inside info on this story today.

Update 2: Now they've got the contract info:

The Yankees offered Torre a one-year deal with a base salary of $5 million and incentives that would have increased his salary to $8 million based on postseason performance. Under that offer, if Torre reached the World Series in 2008, an option for 2009 would have vested.

1	That is awesome of Joe Torre to not say if he is coming back or not then when they offer him a one year deal, he says you know what, No I don't want to come back. Big time middle finger to the Boss and his Boys. ESPN has fixed their graphic by the way.

0	This is pretty neat. If I were Torre I'd get out now for two reasons. Big George setting you up like that in the playoffs and then you not getting fired? Pretty bad. Plus in all honesty this team aint going anywhere. Rivera is gonna leave. Posada should. A-Rod could this year if not next. Pitching staff is going no where but a retirement home. Go somewhere better Joe.

Good for Joe. Who the f wants to deal with this crap year in and out? I love the Yankees, but it's not as if Torre was the greatest game manager to ever live, and he's not the one with the bat in his hands in the postseason. 12 years, 12 postseason appearances, and 4 rings so that after getting knocked out in the 2008 ALDS by the Angels, he can go through this nonsense again. Smart move Joe. Best of luck to him. It's been a good ride.

0	Who does everyone think replaces Mr. Torre? I really think this is the perfect off-season for the Yankees to start it up again, and bring in some new blood. However, I doubt the Yankees see it that way. Seems like it'll be Mattingly or LaRussa to me.

Joe G with that lineup would be formidable -- even with their probable lack of pitching in 08.
