Did you happen to catch Omar Minaya's explanation of the firing yesterday? If he was auditioning for a stand-up comedy routine, he performed quite well.
"I wanted to go directly to Willie myself and personally tell him of this decision. I wanted to look him in the eye and tell him straight.Oh, I see. You fired him at 12am PT on the other side of the country after he'd just won a game and had two more to play in Los Angeles out of respect for the guy. I get it. Wait, no, no I don't and neither does Mets fan Jon Stewart.
I know the perception is that the way it was handled, it was disrespectful, maybe. The reason it was handled quickly is out of respect to Willie."
3,000 miles away from home at 3am... out of respect. Minaya would later add that the most disrespectful thing a general manager can do is fire a guy while he's in uniform. I'm pretty sure Randolph would have settled for being fired in uniform, before he boarded the flight to LA.
The Daily Show and I agree on one thing more than any other: the only calls that should be made at 3am are for sex.
