A little over a week ago, we brought you the story of Ken Mink, a 73-year-old who managed to get onto the Roane State Community College basketball team. It seemed impossible that a guy that age could actually do that, but he did. And he has a silky smooth jumper as well.
Anyway, Mink actually got real playing time in a regulation game yesterday, and man did he ever come through. Well, I mean it's not like he actually won the game for Roane State or anything, but he did actually score, which is pretty remarkable for a 73-year-old playing against guys who don't even know who Harry Truman is.
Mink obviously calmly nailed both free throws, spurring his team on to a brutal beatdown of King College by a score of 93-42. King College now has the unfortunate burden of being the only college basketball team ever to be scored on by a 73-year-old man.Mink, 73, entered the game with about 16 minutes remaining in the second half and attempted one shot in about three minutes. Seven minutes later, he went back in the game, was fouled and made two free throws.
“I found myself on the free-throw line 52 years after my last college game,” Mink said. “I said, ’Just relax and shoot it like you know how to all day long.’ I just floated the shots in there. I’m in the books now. I can relax a little bit.”
But that may change soon enough. Judging by Mink's "I can relax now" comment, I'm sure he's ready to start dominating opponents. And hopefully also start doing those free throw line dunks I've heard so much about.
