Marty Brennaman Thinks Throwing Baseballs Onto The Field Is The Worst Crime In History

Courtesy of the good lads at Deuce of Davenport, we now have video/audio of Cincinnati Reds announcer Marty Brennaman going off on Chicago Cubs fans.

After Adam Dunn launched a mammoth home run, Cubs fans decided they'd throw pretty much every ball in the stadium on to the field in protest. And as a result, Cincinnati Reds announcer Marty Brennaman went off on a rather ridiculous rant, saying Cubs fans are the worst in baseball and how he always roots against them.

Yes Marty. There's clearly nothing worse than fans throwing baseballs out onto the field. I can think of a whole laundry list of much more minor offenses like fans of one team beating up an opposing fan, and of course eventually then returning the favor. Because clearly fans beating the crap out of each other is much preferable to people throwing balls onto the field.

So yes, lay into those Cubs fans. How dare they throw balls onto the field and mock your Reds. Just be careful about making cracks about how the Cubs will never win. Your team isn't exactly on the verge of winning the World Series anytime in the next 25 years either.

Marty, if you want to see real crime, just visit the Bengal's locker room.

Granted, there is a small faction of Cubs fans who are complete imbeciles. They go to games just to get wasted and pretend their Gods gift to women. I'd like to think that I don't fall into this category ... except for that I might do the first and definitely am the second.

Here's what pisses me off about Brennaman. That he hates Cubs fans for constantly blaming the goat. It's the media that has sensationalized the curse. Fans joke about it, but hardly any Cubs fans really believe a goat is causing the losing. It makes for a storyline. Marty being part of the media should realize this.

Secondly, Marty has long hated the Cubs and I've got to think it's rooted in jealously. His counterparts for WGN make far more money than he does. He gets to call games in Cinci with half the stadium full, while Wrigley is sold out every day. I'm curious if long ago he was passed over for the job or something.

This also happened when the Cubs were routing the Reds. Sorry, Marty.

Marty is right. How stupid can you be. You might as well have been throwing trash on the field. What was the point? The Cubs were up 10+ runs, it was a meaningless home run.

Critical fanatic - Marty is in the Hall of Fame. You think he is jealous, that is absurd. Also, please enlighten me and let me know where you find salary information of MLB broadcasters. If that is true that they make more money the answer to that is simple - it's a much larger market. Brennaman is better than anyone the Cubs have ever had and that includes the "great" Harry Caray.

As far as the curse, unfortunately the fact that ANY fans believe the goat is causing the curse is laughable to me.

On any sold out day at Wrigley, I would estimate that about 85% of the fans know nothing about baseball. It's a social thing for them and it results in idiot behavior like we saw the other night.

I actually like Marty in terms of how he does his job, aside from the angst against Cubs fans. He's definitely a hall of famer and enjoyed listening to him when I was going to college in the area.

I think he could have left it at "these behavior is embarrassing to Cubs fans." That would have been sufficient.

Calling them the most obnoxious in baseball, and sharing that he loves when they lose might have been a little unprofessional.

Once again, the exaggeration of the social atmosphere at Cubs games continue to be greatly overrated. I attend roughly 10 or so games every year and there just as many jackasses at other ballparks as there are at Wrigley. It's seems like its a crime that we tend to enjoy ourselves at games. Since we lose so often, might as well, right?

Critical Fanatic - I live in Cincinnati and I have been going to Wrigley Field for the last 15 years - it sucks they don't schedule the Reds on the weekends there like they used to but that's beside the point - I would estimate that more than half the people at Wrigley are transplants who now live in Chicago and cheer for the Cubs and go to the game because that's what society says is cool to do. I don't think the social atmosphere is exaggerated at all and I feel comfortable saying that because I have seen it first hand, year after year. For a place that holds less than 40,000 the ratio of jackasses far exceeds the 5 or so other stadiums I have been to. Don't get me wrong, I love Wrigley and love the city of Chicago but I wish we could weed out the jackasses from the true fans. I have no problem having fun at a game and drinking (even heavily) as long as you are responsible about it but there is never a need to start firing crap on the field. Unless it's the actual homerun ball from the opposing team.

Marty isn't afraid to express his opinion and he tells it like it is. You should know that from your days in Oxford.

Well, yes. Would you agree though, he takes a little too much pleasure in ripping the Cubs?

I'd at least like to think Cubs fans trail the Dodgers, Red Sox and Yankees in term of obnoxiousness, but its tough to not be biased here.

Just trying to speak up for the faction of knowledgeable fans, who enjoy drinking heavily in the bleachers and not acting like idiots while still watching the game. ;)

I wouldn't say he takes pleasure in it but he definitely lets you know where he stands when it comes the the Cubs organization and fans.

Is he blind, def, and stupid? Every team in baseball has fans like that. Even the great Reds fans can be idiots. It is a part of baseball, that having fans that act like this. How do I know this about Reds fans? I have been to a dozen or so games at great american ballpark and have ran into fans just like the ones at wrigley, busch or any where else in baseball.

My good friend I am going to have to completely disagree with your thoughts on Brennaman's jealousy. Marty Brennaman is a hall of fame announcer that has been offered other jobs in bigger markets and turned them down. I will guarantee you that Marty does not care about WGN. Marty is a God in Cincinnati and happy to remain that way. Now with that said... while I found Marty's comments incredibly hilarious... I do think he was a little out of line. Let's keep in perspective who he is talking about here. He is not talking about the die hard Cubs fans that have grown up Cubs fans and will die Cubs fans. He is talking about those (and you know who you are) who move from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and become Cubs fans because they love getting drunk at Wrigley and acting like a total turd. Wrigley sells out not because they have awesome fans who love their team they sell out because they have young professionals who love beer. Nothing wrong with loving beer... but there is a lot wrong with acting like a turd.

Regardless of your residence or the team you root for, you have to draw a distinction between some fans who disrespect their team and their city with bad behavior and making a sweeping generalization about all fans of a certain team. And that's you, the reader, who has nowhere near the experience of dealing with fans of almost every team as does our friend Marty.

Let's also step back and call it what it is; kind of funny. I was there and maybe it's because I am a professional who likes beer, but I thought it was mildly amusing. Stupid, sure. Reason to denigrate every Cubs fan? Not so much.

Bad behavior is streaking on the field or worse, attacking a participant in the contest. If Marty's gonna get all bent out of shape, fine, but let it be a proportionate response to a serious incident; and let it be directed at the perpetrators, only. Leave us beer-drinking professionals who aren't jackasses out of it.

Marty can be all the Hall of Famer he wants to be ... but he's hasn't liked the Cubs because they didn't keep Thom around as the radio voice.

I guess its easy to dismiss Marty's comments as jealousy or because he wants to stand up for his son... but I'm here to tell you as someone who has listened to Marty for the last 21 years or so he hasn't liked Cubs fans far longer than Thom being fired. I'm not saying it's just or fair but jealousy or Thom has nothing to do with it I can promise you... what's the next reason? hummm... perhaps the Cubs didn't let Joe Nuxhall pitch when he was 13 and Marty hated that also... or maybe Harry Carey mocked Chris Sabo's rec-specs?

I was watching the game on tv and Thom Brennaman didn't have a lot of nice things to say about the Cubs fans either.  He held back from ripping them apart but he did say the attitude in the stands change drastically after the Bartman incident.  Nobody talks about the goat anymore because they have Bartman to blame now.  I've never been a Cubs hater and I enjoy visiting Chicago but that incident left a bad taste in my mouth.

That's what I love about the Brennamans.  They aren't afraid to say what they really think.

Yes what an idiot Mart must be.Are you retatrded? He speaks his mind.He is one of the best anouncers in history.Listen to the part where he says it's part of a tradition to throw balls out on the field, but when the cubs fans did what they did he went off on them. And he should have. What are you smoking man?

I guess reds fans just aren't to use to this blatant disrespect to the game. When you come to cincinnati you don't see a lot of drunken idiots who curse the umpire on every bad call, and throw balls on the field.Cubs fans in fact,do disgust me at times, they think they have the world to blame because they can't win the world series.Put a good team on the field, win it all,and stop complaining.

He has every right to criticize the cubs fans what do you want him to do?"Ummmm, this isn't good, they shouldn't be doing that, bad cubs fan"and slaps them on the wrist.

This is what makes him a good announcer. So what should he have said huh?
