Marvin Gaye National Anthem Inspires Nike Team USA Basketball Olympics Ad
Let's Get It On

The discussion over which company has the best advertising could go on forever. Without question, one of those in the conversation would be Nike.

Beer companies always hit the funny button well, Volkswagon knows exactly what their customers are looking for, but very few are able to inspire through emotion as regularly as the Beaverton, Oregon based sporting good behemouth.

Predictably, Nike came prepared for the TV onslaught that is the Olympics, and while I enjoy the "Courage" ad, I haven't seen anything close to this Team USA Basketball advertisement featuring Marvin Gaye singing the National Anthem.

Nike stated the following on their basketball website:

The Star Spangled Banner is played before every game to inspire the players and the fans to greatness. Coach K took a moment out of practice to share a version of the song with his players that, in its own right, made sports history.

Performed for the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, Marvin Gaye’s remix captured the passion of 80s soul, mixed it with some old fashioned patriotism and created a timeless classic.

And like Marvin and the Dream Team before them, this year's Team USA intends to put on a show that will forever go down as one the greatest performances in the history of the sport.

To show support for the men that will represent us in Beijing, Nike Basketball brings Marvin, LeBron, Kobe, J-Kidd and the rest of the team together to pay homage to basketball, America's game.

If Team USA doesn't score a gold, at least Nike can claim one here.

This is so very WRONG! The national anthem is a hymn, not a soundtrack. The singing is wonderful, but not the cut away footage of ball players during the signing — they should be standing at attention in respect of their anthem, not depicted playing ball. The Star Spangled Banner is not just any tune. The ad is HIGHLY offensive and disrespectful. It is not supportive of the Olympic team, it degrades it by demeaning what the song represents. I realize this was intended to be a patriotic ad, but it has been done with outrageously bad taste in a manner that demeans the USA anthem.

To NIKE: take this offensive ad off the air NOW!

Good god, take it easy man.  There is a time and place for the Anthem to be played in full and a NIKE ad is not one of them...  This is a great tribute to our country, our atheletes, and one of our greatest artists.

To NIKE:  Thank you

Um, how is this offensive?  Its pretty damn cool, and theres really no way around that.

I don't think anyone does ads better than Nike.  Humor can be pretty easy to do, but being able to push emotions out of people isn't, and  Nike is able to do that all the time.

There's nothing offensive whatsoever about this video. I'm a US Marine, and I love America as much as anyone, and I think it's a great video. Team USA isn't a bunch of guys going out there for personal glory, or for money, or any other motive besides pride in their country. When they take the court for every practice and every game, it's because they want to represent the United States of America. Just as it would be appropriate to show a montage of US troops overseas during the Star Spangled Banner, it's appropriate to show a montage of Team USA in action during the anthem. What they are trying to do is something that all Americans should be proud of, and they are serving our country in the best way they can.
