Men's 800 Meter Olympic Track Final Features Face Plant Finish In Exchange For Trip To Beijing
Christian Smith Won't Soon Forget This Race, Especially When He Looks In the Mirror

We've been giving the run of the mill world records at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials too much attention. The most exciting race of this last week of intensive trials action occurred in the men's 800 meter race at the track and field trials taking place in Eugene, Oregon.

Eugene has long been considered the capital of track and on Monday night the city made it's presence known in more ways than one during the very grueling 800 meter race. As a self-admitted track geek, this two lap event almost always provides for an exciting finish, but I'm not sure this will be topped considering how much was on the line.

Nick Symmonds, who resides nearby, took home first place, while Oregon Duck sophomore Andrew Wheating took second in comfortable fashion.

Third place was where the drama was at. Make sure to pay attention to the right side of the video as the runners come home down the final stretch. Christian Smith, a member of the Oregon Track Club and 29th qualifier out of 30, dives ahead of defending national champion Khadevis Robinson to earn a trip to Beijing.

Face plant, and a beauty.
