Finally an excuse to throw up Rick Astley's greatest hit. As you may know, or not know, the Mets recently asked their fans to help choose a new sing-a-long during the eighth inning of their home games to replace Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline - which belongs to the Red Sox anyway. They let fans choose between a handful of songs OR do a write-in. Uh oh.
As a result of the write-in, sites like Fark, Deadspin, and Digg urged their readers to flood the Mets web site and write-in Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" in an effort to officially rickroll the Mets.
And guess what, it worked.
Astley's song actually won the vote, but now the gutless Mets are changing the game. Rather than commit to "Never Gonna Give You Up" as the new eighth-inning tune (Because the Mets say it probably doesn’t reflect the fan base’s wishes) the team will play the top six selections once apiece during the first six games of their home stand. The one that draws the largest crowd response will stick. There's a pretty hilarious news report of the whole situation, including an interview with Astley about his take on it, that you can see here.
Here are the six songs they'll be playing.
Tuesday - Never Gonna Give You Up
Wednesday - Living on a Prayer
Thursday - I’m a Believer
Friday - Movin’ Out
Saturday - Sweet Caroline
Sunday - Build Me Up Buttercup
I don't think I have to tell you that Astley's song is by far the best one on there. And if you live within 1,000 miles of NYC, you better be at tonight's game.
Even then, the Mets probably won't use Astley's song. And if they don't, I guarantee you this will become the equivalent of the curse of the Bambino was on the Red Sox.
