Michael Phelps 4x200 Freestyle Relay World Record Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
Might As Well Just Hand Him The Final Three Golds
I hate NBC so much. They took down the 4x200 freestyle relay video where Michael Phelps captured his 5th gold medal of these Olympic Games before I could even finish this post, hence the picture instead of video.

Anyway, Phelps swam the lead leg of the 4x200 relay and produced a blistering time of 1 minute, 43.31 seconds that got the Americans rolling toward a winning world-record time of 6:58.56. In fact, this relay marked the first time the 7-minute barrier has ever been broken in 4x200 freestyle relay. Oh, and I probably should mention Phelps did this only an hour after he set a world record and won gold in the 200m butterfly, one of the most physically taxing events imaginable.

This race also wasn't even close. The second place Russians finished more than 5 seconds behind Phelps and crew.

I'm very tempted to say Phelps is going to win 8 gold medals now. I said before that the one thing that would prevent Phelps from winning all 8 would be one of his relay teams, because Phelps simply doesn't lose as an individual, ever.

Well, he has two relay golds, and there's one more to go - the 400 medley relay.

He'll swim in the 200 individual medley and 100 fly alone. And he'll win both of those, no question.

It's just amazing watching Phelps swim these days. He's so dominant that there isn't even another athlete you can compare him to, not even Tiger. And what's scary is that while he's now the most decorated Olympic athlete ever, he's still going to be swimming in London in 2012. At this rate, he may win 20 golds by the time it's all said and done. Either way, it'll be fun to watch.

I'm getting burned out on Michael Phelps.  Yes he's a hell of a swimmer and probably the best ever.   But, I think they are overstating the greatest Olympic athlete ever stuff.  Just cause he competes in a sport where you can win like 90 medals for the same thing doesn't make him better than people like Jesse Owens, Cassius Clay, Carl Lewis etc.
Actually, the various swimming events are very different. Saying that the butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke are all the same event is like saying hurdles, sprinting and long jump are all the same event. Sure, they have their similarities. But they are definitely distinctly different, and no one has mastered all of them quite like Phelps.

I don't think he is better, but he is definitely in their class of athletes. I think that it is very hard to compare athletes of today with athletes of the past---- Different times----I would rather the media focus on Michael and his gold medals than stupid so called celebrities, athletes, and others getting themselves in trouble.

By the way the swimming events are much like the track events in terms of how many medals are given out.

Just for some perspective...

I'm a water survival instructor for the Marine Corps, and I am qualified to teach the breast stroke (non-competitive) and freestyle stroke. But I can't even DO the butterfly properly. It's a whole different animal.

I can swim.  I was even on the swim team when I was a kid.  What I do is more akin to not drowning than swimming though.  I remember when they tried to teach me the butterfly "properly".  25 years later I still think it was the toughest thing I ever tried to learn.  It was the stroke that most kids got dq'd on for not having proper form.  You right Pat.  Whole different animal alltogether.

I swam as well!------Do you guys remember the rubber band type things they put on your feet to keep them together for the butterfly? In my opinion this stroke is the hardest.
