And so do I. But since my word isn't likely to resonate with you, here's some Marco Belinelli highlights from his time here at the NBA Summer League (Above vs 76ers Gm 2, Below vs Hornets Gm 1).
I would assume many of you are thinking that this is one big overreaction. Wouldn't blame you, but it's not. I paid special attention to Don Nelson's reactions during Marco's second Summer League which I caught live, and throughout he had that classic half-grin donned during the Mavericks series. It's that, "I'm a f****** genius and pulled another fast one on the NBA" look. He most certainly is one after drafting the Italian scoring machine with the 18th pick. Nelson tried to contain his excitement on Monday night:
"I think it's going to work out real well for the both of us ... I think he's been sensational."If I was forced to pick one player from the Vegas NBA Summer League to win me one game right now, I'd take very little time selecting Marco Belinelli. Given significant playing time in his first real NBA game (and I suspect he'll win the SG spot), he could very well drop 30. Don't worry, I'm not getting carried away to the point of calling him greater than Oden or Durant. Merely warning you he's going to be the most productive on offense this season, do in large part to his immense offensive talent but also because he's landed on the most ideal team for his style of play.
I'm also going to change my rookie of the year prediction. I kid you not, he's that "sensational." Even if this is below average competition in Vegas, he appears like the kind of guy who rises to the occasion. He's lights out from anywhere, will wing it without notice (from anywhere) and can slice into the lane with similar effectiveness to Manu Ginobili. Best of all ... I haven't seen a ridiculous flop from him yet. Further cementing his status as my new favorite player.
There's not much room left on any bandwagon that's carrying Don Nelson, but I'm trying to squeze myself in. You should too.
