Referees are having a rough year in the NFL. Before overtime in the Steelers-Ravens Monday Night Football game, the referee in charge of the coin toss did just that. He tossed the coin. There was no flip, no rotation, the coin just went up in the air, and landed. The Steelers captains mentioned it, and if you listen closely, you can hear them talking about it.
I'm not sure what it is this year that has refs making so many obvious mistakes, but they are lucky that this joke of a coin toss didn't result in a Baltimore win. It would have been one more game decided by referees, which would make 3.
The NFL needs to do something, and fast.
