Thirteen Games equals All Day Hockey! [NHL Live Thread]
Today's games get underway early, and run late, so if you are snowed in, rained on, or just simply in a vegetative state, there is a lot of hockey to be had. I'm not sure if our resident hockey queen, and fellow blogger, Jess, will join us, but Bryan and I will start off.
Jess: I'm here! A little late, but I'm gonna jump in...
Here is today's schedule, all times Eastern:
Washington Capitals (11-14-1) at Boston Bruins (18-4-3)
Broadcast: CSN-DC, NESN
Bryan: Bruins will probably suffocate the Caps. Washington just doesn't have it this year even though they beat Carolina. Boston wins.
Debi: Even though Washington isn't over 50% in the win/loss scheme of things, they have surprised me lately. Every time I say they can't win, even though I want them to, they do. Can they beat Boston? Dammit. I think they can, but I just can't pick them. Boston wins this one.
Jess: It's a little late to be a fair pick; Boston is up 2-0 after the first. I won't pick here (though I would have picked Boston)
New York Rangers (13-12) at Pittsburgh Penguins (20-8-0)
Broadcast: NHLN-US, MSG, ROOT
Bryan: I have a lot more confidence against the Rangers than I did against the Leafs. The Pens seem to know how to beat John Tortorella's system...8 is great!
Debi: Normally I would say the Rangers could give Pittsburgh a run for their money, but after the past few games, I just don't see it. Pittsburgh it is.
Jess: Ugh the Rangers are awful lately. Pens.
Ottawa Senators (13-8-6) at Buffalo Sabres (10-14-3)
Broadcast: SNET-E, TVA, MSG-B
Bryan: Buffalo is embarrassingly bad on home ice and this Sens team just continues to impress. Sens win it on the road.
Debi: Agree wholeheartedly, Bryan.
Jess: Hmm I would call an upset here just to be different but I can't do it. Ottawa.
Minnesota Wild (14-10-2) at Colorado Avalanche (10-12-4)
Broadcast: FS-North, FS-Wisconsin, ALTITUDE
Bryan: Didn't these two just play in Minnesota? Since it's in Denver this time I'm taking the Avs for the home ice advantage and the win.
Debi: Hmmmm. Home and home. Wild and Koivu are so hot right now. Avs are floundering just a little. I just don't know if they can pull it all together tonight. I think I have to take the Wild.
Jess: I have faith that the Avs can take Minny at home.
Winnipeg Jets (14-11-2) at Toronto Maple Leafs (15-12-2)
Bryan: Toronto is starting to take a tumble, finding ways to lose the past week. I'm gonna take the Jets to win this one on the road.
Debi: This is gonna be one helluva matchup. The teams have each taken a game in their previous meetings this season, and they are really close in points. However, while the Jets are strengthening, the Leafs have had a couple of losses that shouldn't have been losses. Gotta take the Jets, but I believe it will be a close game.
Jess: Guess what, Debi? Takin' the Jets today! This will be a fantastic game to watch.
Montreal Canadiens (18-5-4) at New Jersey Devils (13-9-6)
Broadcast: CBC, RDS, NHLN-US, MSG
Bryan: Les Habitants vont gagner ce soir! Les Devils sont fatigués après hier soir.
Debi: Just can't go against the Habs in this one. They are too strong.
Jess: Habs are too good, Devils are meh...and Brodeur isn't back yet is he? Gotta take Montreal.
Carolina Hurricanes (15-10-1) at Tampa Bay Lightning (11-15-1)
Broadcast: FS-CR, SUN
Bryan: Tampa Bay is falling apart and it's not pretty at all. Canes win and stay atop the division as the Bolts keep it close, but ultimately find a way to lose.
Jess: Hmmm...I believe THIS will be my upset special. Tampa Bay at home.
Phoenix Coyotes (13-11-3) at Columbus Blue Jackets (10-12-6)
Broadcast: FS-A PLUS, FS-O
Bryan: Phoenix isn't impressing me, but the Jackets are riding a franchise record 9-game point steak and staying in every game. I'm going to actually take Columbus for the win.
Debi: Columbus just keeps on surprising me! I'm still giggling over their game with Vancouver. Can they win this one? I don't think so, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it go to OT to get that double digits franchise record.
Jess: Wow, this is actually a tougher one than it should be. Columbus is looking on the up and up. Two upset specials? Yes please!
New York Islanders (12-12-3) at Florida Panthers (7-15-6)
Broadcast: MSG PLUS; FS-Florida
Bryan: Woof! Umm, Isles aren't a complete embarrassment like the Panthers. I gotta take the Isles, but I think I'd rather watch paint dry.
Debi: The meeting of these two teams is just a cluster.... Neither team is impressive, both are rather blah. I gotta take the Isles in this one, though.
Jess: Gah. New York.
Anaheim Ducks (20-3-3) at St. Louis Blues (15-10-2)
Broadcast: PRIME, FS-MW
Bryan: Jess, have faith in your Ducks. The Blues will give em all they got, but they won't quite be able to overtake the Mighty Ducks, and yes they are mighty this year!
Debi: HA! Sorry, Scott, I just don't think your Blues have quite enough to beat the Ducks. I believe the game will be a good one, and well played by both teams, but the Ducks will prevail.
Jess: I'm skrred. (Ack don't remind me of the "Mighty" Ducks.)
Chicago Blackhawks (22-2-3) at Dallas Stars (12-11-3)
Broadcast: CSN-Chicago, FS-Southwest
Bryan: Okay Chicago, time to blow out the Stars. I'm taking the Hawks.
Debi: Is there such a thing as a dislike bandwagon? Just as I try to temper my dislike of a team when a friend is a follower, I find myself disliking the Dallas Stars more and more. In any case, I don't think the Stars have a hope in hell in this game.
Jess: Please for the love of all that is good and decent, KILL the Stars!
Detroit Red Wings (15-10-2) at Vancouver Canucks (13-7-6)
Broadcast: NHLN-US, CBC, RDS2, FS-Detroit+
Bryan: Ugh. I gotta take the Canucks. Sorry Debi, but my disdain for the Wings is the deciding factor.
Debi: I watched the Detroit/Edmonton game last night, and while I don't care for either team, it was some poetic justice after the gloating some Edmonton fans at Boston Pizza did early in the game. They actually weren't around for the end or Petry's goal into his own net. Too bad, it could have been fun. In any case, I think Detroit has Vancouver's number.
Jess: Oh my. I'm taking Detroit, but ugh.
San Jose Sharks (12-8-6) at Los Angeles Kings (14-10-2)
Broadcast: CSN-California, FS-West
Bryan: San Jose won the other night at the Shark Tank. The Kings will repay the favor at Staples as the Sharks are winning games at a snail's pace after that hot start. 2 in a row seems almost unheard of for them right now.
Debi: I had really high hopes for the Kings on Thursday, but the penalties taken by Muzzin derailed the team. San Jose took that one, but I don't think they will get the win tonight.
Jess: Come on Kings! I thought they were going to come back and beat those Sharks but they just ran out of time. I think they do it tonight.
The games are underway, and I, at least will be around most of the day and night. It is going to be a great day of hockey! And, just because Jess started the tradition of a closing video, here is my favorite goalie in action.
