Sunday chock-full of NHL action [Live NHL Thread]

3/10/13 in NHL   |   Jess   |   35116 respect

Greetings puckheads, and happy NHL Sunday! There are ten games to whet our hockey appetites today, giving us a nice fat lineup.

Blog Photo - NHL Sunday Live ThreadBK: Wow, 10 games on a SUNDAY?! Holy crap I am loving this shortened season! I'm awake and remembered to set my clock ahead...Debi and Jess, did you? I love the extra hour of daylight, but I hate losing an hour of sleep. So the NBC game at Verizon Center is really starting at 11:30 ET, right? All the teams that played yesterday and have to travel are really going to have fun.

Yes, I think we're going to have a wacky day of hockey. And as for setting my clocks ahead - I sure did, BK. You lose an hour of sleep? Since it's always on a Sunday, I just sleep in. No skin off my back...I guess I lose "awake" hours though now that I think about it.

So, I figured since it's mid-way through the season now would be a fun time to start displaying your hosts' pick records! Our numbers will be weird, considering we don't always pick all of the games, and there are occasionally games we miss so not only will you be getting our straight W-L records but also a percentage for each of us to compare.

As you can see, we're about as close to each other as you can get! Okay, let's get started with today's games...

12:30pm
Game: Rangers (12-9-2) @ Capitals (10-12-1)
Broadcast: NBC, TSN2
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - I am going with the Rangers who had the day off yesterday. Washington made some boneheaded moves and paid for it in the 3rd period, they might do the same dumb stuff in this one.

Debi - The Capitals were going so strong lately, only skidding when they came up against the Islanders. Will the other New York team do the same? Unfortunately, I think it's likely. I hope not, but I'm afraid the Rangers might be more than Washington can handle.

Jess: What a conundrum. The Rangers are kind of barely getting by right now, and the Caps are looking a lot better. I'm going to shock the world here and call this one for the Caps.

5:00pm
Game: Blue Jackets (9-12-4) @ Red Wings (12-9-4)
Broadcast: FS-O, FS-D
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - Ooh, a home and home! Can the Jackets sweep it? I highly doubt it, asking them to beat the same team two nights in a row is asking a hell of a lot. I was wrong yesterday and proud of Columbus for proving me wrong, but I am not going against the Wings at The Joe.

Debi - Holy Columbus, Batman!! Just when we have all pretty much counted you out, you surprise us! I giggled when the Blue Jackets beat Detroit the other night, and I fully expect to giggle again tonight!

Jess - I don't think there's a chance in h-e-double hockey sticks that Columbus beats these guys two times in a row. Once was a pretty big deal. Red Wings win.

6:00pm
Blog Photo - NHL Sunday Live ThreadGame: Canadiens (16-5-4) @ Panthers (7-12-6)
Broadcast: RDS, TSN-HABS, FS-F
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK -  The Habs came back last night from 3-1 to beat the Bolts 4-3. Even an extra day off isn't going to help Florida. They are just a mess, and because of that, Les Habitants vont gagner ce soir!

Debi - The Habs got it!

Jess - Habs, easy.

7:00pm
Game: Jets (12-11-1) @ Devils (11-9-5)
Broadcast: TSN-JETS, MSG
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - I'm taking the Jets. The free fall for the Devils continues, and if they don't get Marty back soon the defending Eastern Conference champs are going to miss the playoffs altogether!

Debi - The Jets are on a real role right now and New Jersey is struggling, so once again, I am going with the Jets.

Jess - I'm going to take the Devils in this one. I know they've been bad recently and I know the Jets are a better team but I think this upset happens in Jersey.

7:00pm
Game: Islanders (11-11-3) @ Penguins (17-8-0)
Broadcast: MSG PLUS, ROOT
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK -  Both teams played yesterday, but I have a feeling the Pens are going to be the more tired bunch having to go to a shootout in Toronto. That said, I look for them to regain their dominance of the Isles on their home ice and prove the first time they came to Consol this year was a fluke.

Debi - In the previous two matchups the visitors have won, splitting the games, so I gotta go with the Islanders tonight, sorry Bry!!

Jess: This is such a weird schedule, by the way. I know the Islanders aren't *awful* but they're not great either. Pens are strong, even when tired. What happened with Malkin yesterday - is he still out? No matter, I think they take this game.

7:00pm
Game: Oilers (8-11-5) @ Blackhawks (21-1-3)
Broadcast: SNET-W, CSN-CH
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK -  Now that it finally happened, the Hawks will probably make the Oilers look stupid. I doubt they lose 2 in a row even though Edmonton played them tough last week.

Debi - Do I really think the Avs beating the Blackhawks is going to mean every team they play against is going to walk all over them?? Hell no. I especially don't believe the Oilers are going to be able to beat the number one team in the league.

Jess - I don't care if the Avs did break the seal - no way do the Blackhawks lose to Edmonton today. I think with that streak broken now they can relax and dare I say - play even better.

7:00pm
Game: Sabres (9-13-3) @ Flyers (11-14-1)
Broadcast: TSN2, NBCSN
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - Yes, the Flyers play better at home, and yes the Sabres are a complete mess. However, you know I'm taking Buffalo as I would never in my life pick those jerks from the other side of PA!

Debi - Ugh. (Do I say that too much?) It has to be Philly tonight. They need this win if they want to be in the playoffs. Can they do it? I hope so

Jess - Oye. Flyers. But I'm surprisingly not confident.

8:00pm
Game: Canucks (11-6-6) @ Wild (12-9-2)
Broadcast: SNET-P, FS-N
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - Hmm, I know the Wild had to go to a shootout to beat Christi's Preds last night, but I think they can take the Canucks with as well as they've played on their home ice. Debi, this one's for you, Wild win it!

Debi - LOL do I really have to say?

Jess - I like the Wild. This will be a great game though.

8:00pm
Blog Photo - NHL Sunday Live ThreadGame: Sharks (11-7-5) @ Avalanche (9-10-4)
Broadcast: CSN-CA, ALT
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - I'm gonna take the Avs riding the momentum from the other night. They're pretty damn good on home ice!

Debi - The Avs have got to be on such a high. They came so close to derailing the Blackhawks one night, only accomplishing that task a couple of nights later. Can they keep the momentum going? Here's hoping so, because I'm taking them for the win tonight.

Jess - Hmm, they ARE good on home ice but I think the Sharks take it away from them. I'll be happy if they don't though.

8:00pm
Game: Blues (13-9-2) @ Ducks (17-3-3)
Broadcast: FS-MW, FS-W
Bet QBucks on this game!
Picks:
BK - The Blues stole one at the Shark Tank yesterday afternoon, winning 4-3 in OT after being down 3-1 going into the 3rd period. I doubt they do that 2 days in a row though. The Sharks aren't as good as the Ducks, who are a complete team it appears. Anaheim wins it on home ice.

Debi - The Blues derailed the Sharks the other night, but I don't believe they can defeat the Ducks. Ducks it is!

Jess - The Blues scare me, I'm not gonna lie.

That was skrry. Had to fight for that one.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Wild are on top of the Division, defeating the Canucks 4-2.  Zack Parise gets 2 goals

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Make that 4-2 Wild.  Schneider looks like a minor league goalie tonight, and the players are playing as individuals, rather than as a team.  I really haven't seen them play much this year, but the "fans" at work have been saying they are playing like crap, so I decided to watch.

They are right.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Ohhhh look!!! The Ducks are up 3-2!

Oh yeah and the nuckleheads got another one.  Also 3-2

3/10/13   |   Jess   |   35116 respect

Bobby Ryan ties it up!

3/10/13   |   Jess   |   35116 respect

*expletive*

And indecision Blackhawks.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

And it was too little, too late.  Edmonton wins.

The announcers are making all kinds of excuses for the Canucks failing on the PP.  Kesler isn't playing so they don't have his expertise with the ginger twins.  Then of course, they say they aren't making excuses.

3/10/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

6-1 the final, and the Pens walk away with this one, 5 in a row!

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Chicago has pulled within one of Edmonton - 6-5 with half the third gone.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

nuckleheads get one.  Backstrom just got a great save even while one of his own players was falling over him!

3/10/13   |   Jess   |   35116 respect

1 - Hiller needs to take lessons from Fasth on how to handle rebounds
2 - Hazy needs to take lessons from Ahlers on how to properly utilize the "shutout curse"

3/10/13   |   Jess   |   35116 respect

Cogliano ties it up. WHOOHOO

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Spurgeon scores on the PP, a beautiful slap shot, making it  3-0 Wild.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Mason Raymond gets a 2 minute penalty for running Brodin into the boards.  It wasn't intentional and it was clearly unintentional.  Raymond immediately checked on Brodin to be sure he was okay.

Wild on a second power play. 0-fer on the first one

3/10/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

"Dupuis gets his 2nd, the Pens lead 6-1, and I think we can safely say that Elvis has just left the building."

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

2-0 Wild over the Canucks

Still giggling.

A couple of fights and a couple of wannabe fights so far.  Heading into the second period.

ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!! 9 seconds in, Garrison gets a tripping penalty because the Wild had a breakaway and were trying to duplicate the first period....

3/10/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Holy hell, Kunitz with his 17th on the HT, and not to be denied of the team lead, Neal gets his 17th just 16 seconds later!

3/10/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

"THERE IT IS!  The hat trick for Chris Kunitz...and Donna needs a donut!"  4-1 Pens!

3/10/13   |   Jess   |   35116 respect

Gah. Blues strike first. Wake up, Ducks. (I don't like the way Hiller handles the puck after watching Fasth...he gives up scary rebounds rather than redirecting where it needs to go)

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Okay, I feel a little better, the Jets, Islanders and 'Hawks have all come back to score a goal.  I was beginning to worry I was going to be completely humiliated.

Well I still might be, but at least they aren't all shut outs.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Wild score 24 seconds in to the first period.  First shot of the game.

OMG I can't stop giggling....

3/10/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Wow, the Pens are all over the Isles, 3-0 after 1 period, 2 PP goals from Kunitz and 3 assists from Crosby.  The Isles came out guns a-blazin' the first 5 minutes, but after that the Pens took control.  I just want to see them keep their foot on the gas and not slack off in the 2nd period like they've been doing all year.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Columbus wins in a shoot out laugh

LOL Most games are just getting started!! However, Washington did lose so although I picked the Rangers, I wanted the Caps.  The Rangers won.

Detroit and Columbus are tied in the third.

Of course the one time I pick against them in a questionable game, the Rangers pull it off.

3/10/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

BTW I am STUNNED that Edmonton is up 2 on Chicago.

I don't have to change my clock.  All I have to remember is that the rest of the world did, so all the shows I usually program to watch are on an hour earlier......
