NHL Thursday Night [Live Thread]

It's Thursday Night - Are you ready for some Hockey?

Blog Photo - NHL Thursday Night [Live Thread]Of course, most of the hockey news today centers around the Trade Deadline and the trades that have been made so far.  Most recently, Jarome Iginla was traded by the Calgary Flames to the Pittsburgh Penguins, for two college players and a first round draft pick.  Jay Feaster, General Manager of the Flames indicated the team is making moves for the future, and because Jarome wanted a trade to a team he felt could win a Stanley Cup, the fit was perfect.  The Pens have made numerous trades so far this season, putting all their focus into building a team that can win the Cup this year.  Whether either team's strategy will work remains to be seen, but certainly, the Pens will be the first to be revealed.

Hockey games do go on, and tonight we have a full slate.  Jess is away for the weekend, and I'm not sure if she will jump in from time to time. Here is our schedule, all times Eastern:

Jess: peeking in real quick; my picks will be short and sweet but I wanted to get them in!

7:00 pm

Carolina Hurricanes (15-14-2) at Toronto Maple Leafs (18-12-4)
Broadcast:  FS-CR, LEAFS TV

Bryan: I'm gonna make it a clean sweep and also take the Leafs.

Jess: Toronto at home - they're looking good right now.

Debi:  The Hurricanes have dominated the series between the two teams so far, but without Cam Ward, and with further goalie issues, success is questionable.  Taking the Leafs here.

New York Islanders (15-15-3) at Philadelphia Flyers (13-17-2)
Broadcast:  MSG PLUS, CSN-PH

Bryan: Isles because I will never in my life pick Philly.

Jess: I'm "meh" about this game. Flyers.

Debi:  I'm really torn here.  I think the Isles should have it, but my gut is saying Philly, so the Flyers it is.

Winnipeg Jets (18-14-2) at Pittsburgh Penguins (26-8-0)
Broadcast:  TSN-JETS, ROOT

Bryan: Pavelec always plays just bad enough to lose in Pittsburgh, and Malkin is supposed to be back tonight.  That means James Neal will no longer be lost.  This will not be the game that breaks the streak.

Jess: Remember that "vulnerability" thing I preach? I'm gonna say Jets, just cuz.

Debi:  Pens

7:30 pm

New York Rangers (16-13-3) at Ottawa Senators (18-9-6)
Broadcast: RDS, MSG, SNET-E

Bryan: I will take the Rangers here just to play Devil's advocate.

Jess: What the heck is going on with the Rangers? Sens.

Debi:  I still haven't figured out what games I get on Sportsnet.  The NHL seems to think I can travel across the country at the drop of a hat to attend a game, so probably I won't see this, but the Sens should have it.

Blog Photo - NHL Thursday Night [Live Thread]
Buffalo Sabres (13-16-4) at Florida Panthers (9-19-6)
Broadcast:  MSG-B, FS-F

Bryan: Woof...

Jess: Oh my. Panthers hit double digits tonight, only because they're at home. Not that it usually matters much, with them.

Debi:  The Sabres have a new coach, and that hasn't been a good thing, necessarily.  However, the Panthers, well, they suck lately, and in part, because of injuries.  I think the Sabres have their skates under them again and should be able to get this win.

8:00 pm

Los Angeles Kings (18-12-2) at St. Louis Blues (17-13-2)
Broadcast:  NHLN-US, FS-W, FS-MW

Bryan: I'm taking the Kings, the Blues struggle against them.

Jess: Hmm. Blues.

Debi:  Kings sweep, sweep, sweep

Phoenix Coyotes (13-15-5) at Nashville Predators (14-13-6)
Broadcast:  FS-A PLUS, FS-TN

Bryan: Predators behind another strong effort from Rinne

Jess: Gotta go with the Preds

Debi:  Will this be the game that the Coyotes snap out of their losing streak?? Nah.

9:30 pm

Columbus Blue Jackets (13-13-7) at Edmonton Oilers (12-13-7)
Broadcast:  FS-Ohio, SNET-West

Bryan: Hmm, gonna take Columbus but you never know.

Jess: Blue Jackets.

Debi:  The Columbus Blue Jackets have a better record than the Flames.  Ugh.  Last night I saw a twitter that said "Columbus can now rest in the knowledge that there is another team everyone is laughing at".  I hope they win.

10:00 pm

Colorado Avalanche (11-17-4) at Vancouver Canucks (18-9-6)
Broadcast:  ALT, SNET-P

Bryan: I'll side with Jess and say that the Avs actually do something right on the road.

Jess: Another upset special.

Debi:  Please hockey gods, give me something to lift my spirits.

10:30 pm

Detroit Red Wings (17-11-5) at San Jose Sharks (15-11-6)
Broadcast:  FS-Detroit; CSN-California

Bryan:  Sharks...chomp chomp chomp!  Please for the love of God kill Detroit!

Jess: Ugh. Wings.

Debi:  I have to believe the Sharks have some kind of momentum after last night.  I can't believe what happened with the Ducks, but since I didn't get to see the game, I guess I have to.  Gotta go with the Sharks.

There you have it.  I'll ask for a little indulgence here.  Normally I would post a video of some great saves or fantastic shots from last night, but instead, I'm including a video of some of Iginla's greatest moments as one of the Calgary Flames.  Thanks for the memories.

One out of four agreed with you, the rest put Iginla in the top line and moved Dupuis to the third.  The one who agreed put Iginla and Malkin together with Neal in the second line.

I thought he should be with Malkin.

That's what the lineup actually is today, Iginla is on the second line with Neal and Malkin.

I'd say they should probably put him with Malkin and Neal.  I know there's talk of Kunitz having success with Malkin last year but you can't break up that top line. Crosby, Kunitz, and Dupuis are playing better together than they ever have before.  You want Iginla and Morrow to be huge additions while at the same time keeping that chemistry together that has gotten them this far.

Agreed.. But man they play tough already.... this short season may prove advantageous for them!!!

Hockey gods hate me crying

The Avs tied it up.  Half way thru the third they are at 1 apiece.  C'mon hockey gods, be nice to me!!!

Career shutout #50 for Tomas Vokoun, 26th goalie in NHL history to reach the mark!  14 and counting...3 to tie, 4 to break the record.

"Look out Loretta!"  Dupuis gets his 2nd of the game, and the Pens get their 2nd shorty of the year, 4-0 Pens!

*assist for Vokoun*

Just as I write that, make it 3-0 as Dupuis gets his 16th!  "Never teach a pig to sing!"

2-0 Pens after 1 period, #20 for Chris Kunitz, and welcome back Geno!
