Red Wings Lead Series 2-0
Who’s one step closer to hoisting Lord Stanley? The Wrap-Around is your daily update for last nights’ NHL Playoff action.Detroit once again controlled the game, outshooting the Penguins 34-22. More importantly, Pittsburgh's shot chances were not very good ones. Osgood made all the saves he needed to again, and became the 4th goalie in NHL history to record back-to-back shutouts to start the Finals.
Detroit already had two goals before the Penguins had their first shot 12 minutes into the game. Brad Stuart, a defenseman who certainly isn't known for his offense, was the man who gave Detroit the 1-0 lead. He had an open look, and just ripped it, and it bounced off of Fleury and went in. A few minutes later, at the 11:18 mark, Detroit took a 2-0 lead. Henrik Zetterberg's shot got by Fleury, and as it slowly approached the red line, Tomas Holmstrom gave it the extra push to secure the goal.
Detroit had 12 shots to Pittsburgh's 6 at periods' end, but Pittsburgh would not have a shot during 5-on-5 hockey until 5 mintues through the 2nd period. Pittsburgh had their best shot with 4 minutes to go in the 2nd. Lilja just fell over, giving the Penguins a wide open shot at Osgood, but it went wide. Shot wise, the second period was almost the same, Pittsburgh had 6, and Detroit had 11.
Halfway through the 3rd, Detroit decided to add to their 3-0 lead. During a 4-on-4, Vatteri Filppula got a breakaway and beat Fleury while being tripped by the defender chasing him. Later on the third, the formerly concussed Johan Franzen got a cheap shot to the head by Gary Roberts, and it wasn't much longer in the period that Franzen decided to start scrapping. Detroit ended up with a powerplay, as Franzen got 2 mintues and Max Talbot got 4 for roughing, but the powerplay did not result in anything.
Towards the end, Osgood got hit on a cheap shot, and that prompted everyone on the ice to fight. There were so many penalties, that the referees actually had to write down all of them on paper by the box. In the end, shots were 11-10 in the period, but Pittsburgh still could not score, and the Red Wings would win 3-0.
Detroit now leads the series 2-0, game 3 is in Pittsburgh. That game is Wednesday, 8 PM ET on NBC and CBC.
Detroit 3, Pittsburgh 0.
